Garage repair created new fault
Good evening all. Am after some advice please.
I took my car into a (reputable) garage and paid £500 for a new steering column after my power steering failed. Within a few days, the car would not start and dash showed steering fault. I took it back, they had it a few days, then I collected it all fixed with no charge to me.
Day later, same thing happened. It went back, was in for 2 weeks )I had a courtesy car, thankfully) again collected no charge and wasn’t told it was probably something in steering lock mechanism that was disturbed when new motor was fitted.
Few days later, same fault. Recovered for 3rd time to garage. They had for 3 weeks with no word. I called them and they said they had sent an electronic part from steering lock off to be re-coded and that I would be charged for that part.
Basically I would like to know where I stand with this. They are saying the new fault isn’t their fault and so I have to pay for the part.
Many thanks guys.

Did they ask your permission to go ahead and send it off and charge you? If not then I would say call them tomorrow, discuss it with the garages manger. If it is a new part that requires coding to your car and they failed to do this then tough they suck up the cost.0 -
I did query this. They said I had a choice and they could still remove the part. This was Wednesday. The part was sent off Saturday so it had already gone.0

And ps it’s a used part anyway. I said they should’ve asked me first and they said they didn’t want to delay the Fox any longer as had been over 2 weeks already.0

Your not liable for anything you didn't authorise but if they used the pressure tactic for you to confirm then your liable to paying for it.0 -
They are saying that I could ask them to remove the part.
But it would still not be working and with the new fault that I didn’t leave it with.0 -

I took it to them with a fault that required a new steering column.
I’m fitting that, they’ve caused an issue with the steering mechanism. But saying that’s what happens sometimes when things are disturbed and it’s not their fault.
How have I got to pay another £100!!0 -
