Of course, what else would you call it?!

Strangely, they are often described as "plug tops". I have no idea why.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

^ interesting, not heard that one. In the aircraft business thay used to call bulbs “filaments” which makes sense really. Though with the advent of LEDs, that is being consigned to history.

OP, are the fuses in the "Fuse box which is old with cartridge inserts these have wires intact" actually a cartridge fuse, as in the holder contains a "cartridge" like a bigger version of the ones found in 13 plugs. Or are they "rewireables" which have a visible length of fuse wire in them?
In either case I'd change the cartridge or wire (Obviously with the correct replacement). I've seen plenty of cartridge type fuses that had "blown" and would still conduct enough to light something that only need a low current. The rewireable type sometimes blow out of sight.

Connector BS 1363 female pins? :):) Or plug bottoms?

Seriously though in general connectors come in all shapes and sizes and There are many examples of female bodies with male pins and male bodies with male pins and some inbetween the two......so which then should we call the plug socket or socket plug? It may seem a pedantic point to some but if we do not get the terminology correct it can lead to misinterpretation or confusion, mistakes and risks. It does seem likely that some of those who call these BS 1363 sockets 'plug sockets' do not have sufficient knowledge to be competent and rely on sketchy suggestion from others and assume those suggested courses of action are correct!I

Edit: not aimed at any particular poster!!

You say the wire fuse in the box hasnt blown but have you inspected it closely and used a multimeter to measure any resistance across its blades?
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

Yes... Well... That appears to miss the point that Screwfix is a DIY shop and cannot be regarded as the bastion of truth and correctness in relation to electrical installation materials. Electricians buy from electrical wholesalers - not from Screwfix.

Thats only the second time I've heard that.

A very old electrician I worked with called plugs 'plug tops', maybe its an old electrician thing, when people did proper apprenticeships.

I used to catch him reading the newspaper and I'd say 'haven't you got any work to do?' and he'd say 'it's all running' You cant argue with that

Anyway, he's dead now, but a lovely man.
