I ordered an item from Amazon.com which cost me £18.41 (P&P included). Today I had to pay £3.58 VAT plus £8.00 handling fee to the Royal Mail which bumped the grand total up to £29.99.

I've no complaint about paying the VAT charge as I was expecting it but the £8.00 charged by the Royal Mail is totally unjustified and just smacks of pure greed!

why didnt you pay it then?
  • This is very frustrating to read, what people need to understand that this fee is small compared to most companies. If Royal Mail or other carriers for that fact didn't pay and collect the fee on your behalf and then deliver it to your nearest office. You'd pay a whole lot more and be waiting a very long time but some of the people on this form will not get that and convince them self that this is a bad/expensive service.

If you were expecting VAT then why didn't you do the clearing yourself? You wouldn't have had to pay Royal Mail to do it.

On what basis do you consider £8 unjustified? How much would it cost you to fill in the forms and make the arrangements?

Because Amazon.com won't write "Goods to be cleared by the importer" on their parcels, perhaps?

Then the poster can make that choice with their wallet
however had the selected priority shipping, then Amazon.com would normally deal with the clearance in advance

Then again in my case the duty was allready paid and i still got stung for it, I don't give a flying one whether Customs or RM made the mistake, I got stung for it and had to sort out the mess myself. Whover was unaware Sweden was in the EU should have not have been in the job. I cna understand they might no have known "tull som erlagts" or "förtullat" but perhaps they should have found someone who did before jävla me about.

  • Anyone know If they refund the 'handling charge' back if you dispute and win the customs charge?

I've been charged 11.32 on an item that cost me £10 but if all I'm going to get back is £3 I'm not sure I can want to spend days dealing with the bureaucratic nightmare of the HMRC.

Royal Mail advised me they have a package for me. Sender didn't pay enough postage costs, there's a Custom Charge and £8 handling fee from post office.
I am not expecting anything and have not ordered anything.
How would I know if it's worth collecting or some scam?
Would you collect it if it was you?
    Thanks

It will be held at your local Delivery Office. Call round, and as it is brought out, ask to check the sender as it may not be for you.

They will not let you open it, but you will get to read the declaration. If you do not accept then there is no fee to pay.

Will they actually let me check the package before paying any money?
