maybe so. however HMRC have the power to decide duty payable regardless of customs declaration etc
So i would expect it would be unlikely for a carrier to challenge HMRC

But duty had allready been paid. RM/PF then applied their own handing charge making them also in the wrong. Anyway I got a complete refund from the company, who then claimed against HMRC (who folded straight away).

RM pay the duty. the fee is for doing that
perhaps you could blame HMRCs electricity supplier for giving them light to do their work

I don't believe any organisation who subcontracts has no way of challenging wrong decisions by their contractee.
The duty was paid, twice at one point and it was clearly marked as paid when I recieved it after paying hte second time. The RM/PF mouthbreather was also confused by being paid by a franked label. Personaly he should really not have been dealing with the public.

well thats your choice to believe
I stand that HMRC make the call if duty is paypable regaedless of marking on the packages

Indeed it's HMRC that decide. Not the end couriers. So perhaps your vent should be at them, not RM or PF.

  • Ok, as I understand it from this thread if I buy an item (as I have) from outside the EU (USA) I am liable to pay customs on it if the item is worth more than £18. Is that right?
Welll how come I've been charged £11.93 (inc the famous £8 RM charge) for an item that cost me£16.07?!?

Nope. It went down to £15 not so long ago. So 20% VAT on your 16 quid item is a bit over 3 quid then the RM handling charge on top.

Yes, you should not be receiving any further request for customs duties or handling fees. Amazon have dispatched your parcel with a courier who will handle the clearance for you. If you parcel is delivered by Royal Mail, it will already have cleared customs by the time it reaches them and so they won't be charging any fees.
This is everybody's fault but mine.
  • I have just encountered the same problem, I'm fuming. I ordered $36.58 of goods, just over £18. Of course my luck is that you pay nothing under £18 but a few pence over and you pay the VAT (so £3.28) and Royal Mails £8 handling fee!!

So I have paid an additional £11.28 on goods that only cost around £18.30

That's insane, I'm furious but fear there's nothing I can do about it :(
I ordered an item from Amazon.com which cost me £18.41 (P&P included). Today I had to pay £3.58 VAT plus £8.00 handling fee to the Royal Mail which bumped the grand total up to £29.99.

I've no complaint about paying the VAT charge as I was expecting it but the £8.00 charged by the Royal Mail is totally unjustified and just smacks of pure greed!
