Job issues - How can i move on?
Comments

I'm sorry. I love my job. I've always loved every job I had. Even the one that unfairly dismissed me - in which case I also enjoyed the financial award my union got me! But you are right. A lot of people don't but they do it anyway. That's the test of a courageous person. It's easy to do a job you like. It takes mettle to do one you don't. Respect....Everyone would like a job they actually enjoy. You won't find many that are actually doing that. I don't think I've ever had a job I enjoy. That's the really real world for you.0 -
Im stuck in a little dilemma and im wondering if anyone can help.
So in 2010 i was convicted of fraud, i received a jail term of 5years in which i served half of this sentence.
Due to this my conviction is never SPENT. Ive been self employed since being released but it isnt working out anymore and im now seeking a career/employment.
I recently applied for Ocado to deliver groceries as i drive.
I passed the phone and face to face interview and today took a driving harassment.
A few hours ago i got a call offering me the job in which i accepted but then they said subject to a CRB check, In which i told them i do have a conviction and disclosed it.
Immediately the job offer was withdrawn and i was told " Sorry you cant work for us as we dont employ anyone with a record"
I dont understand why this would be an issue when dealing with customers as i handle no cash, No card details and just deliver customer shopping as directed. But i guess im not allowed to try and make a good life eh?
So i ask, How can i gain good employment with this on my record?
Im no good at manual/skilled labour, I dont think a job working on a cashiers till would be suitable for obvious reasons. Im looking for something in driving or maybe even fraud prevention ( Wishful thinking )
Im just lost and i dont see how i can progress, How can i have a future when my past is there to haunt me so to speak. We all make mistakes and if im honest i believe Ocado should of looked more into my conviction and realized i pose no risk to customers as it wasn't theft, burglary etc.
Any advice would be much appreciated as i really want to get into work and provide for my family.
Surely after 5 years you dont have to declare it?
As such, dont apply for jobs that have criminal record checks as they'll show up. If you do apply and they subsequently say they are going to do a DBS check then withdraw from the process and move on to the next job application.
Just because you cant get a job as a driver for Ocado, doesnt mean you cant get a job anywhere. You need to apply for the right jobs for your circumstances.0 -
Like i stated all vans are camera and tracked so i dont see this being an issue. And i hardly want to steal someones lamb or veg

its a groceries delivery job, the most expensive thing on there would be cigarettes/alcohol in which would be accounted for a number of times
The problem is perception and risk.
What happens if someone realises your history and goes to the papers or social media saying ASDA are putting their customers at risk?
Not true necessarily, but enough to put Ocado on the back foot and maybe lose them customers.0 -
Seems everything stems to skilled/manual work in which im useless and dont enjoy doing. I was asked when offered the job hence why i declared and was then immediately rejected. Its a shame as id of enjoyed the job and done my best to prove i would of been good. Most driving jobs want a DBS check but i believe they should of looked into things a little more to understand the convicition, Giving me more of a chance so to speak.
There are plenty of non manual work that doesnt require a DBS check - you just need to start to look in to what does and what doesnt.
Its not about giving you a chance, they wont want to take the risk of it getting on to social media / the papers that they have an (ex) fraudster working for them who they are letting go in to peoples homes.0 -

that's the kind of question which NACRO and the organisations listed by BrassicWoman would be able to answer in a heartbeat. They would also be able to advise the OP on how to disclose, and if they have connections in his area they will know which employers will and will not consider employing him.Is it that its never spent or is it that it will always come up on a criminal record check?
It can be "spent" in 5 years, meaning you dont have to declare it, but it will still appear on a DBS check.Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
I mostly agree with the OP. He got caught, got his punishment and served his time and is back in the real world. If prison is meant to be about "rehabilitation" then surely 8 years ;later a job as a delivery driver shouldnt be impossible to get.
Also it just shows that even with this and being honest by declaring past convictions it goes agaist you.
I am in a similar situation to the OP. I got 9 months for benefit fraud earlier this year. I am working as a labourer on sites - not what I want to do but all I can get for now. I was in the Army so linked in with a military charity that works with ex Army people who have been in prison.
For any normal person going to prison has to be a low point in their lives. But what it does to your family (my Dad is ex police officer), seeing your name splashed in the paper saying you have been "caged", having to explain to my son why I wouldnt be around for his birthday and why I wouldnt be around for a while broke my heart.
The comment about saying that the OPs children will probably follow in his footsteps is harsh. They mightnt even know about his past. I know I would be devastated if my son ended up in prison like it did my Dad seeing me there. It is out of order to bring children into it.
And yes we are both "criminals" but there is a big difference between somebody doing theft or fraud and a drug deler, rapist or murderer0 -
As I’ve already stated earlier. If the sentence issued was 48 months or more the conviction NEVER becomes spent, therefore when asked you LEGALLY have to declare and subsequently would therefore show up on a basic, standard and enhanced DBS check,0

Yes, i think you're right there.
The O/P is pretty much stuffed then and would rely on an employer to be able to see past the conviction.
Either that or look at another avenue of self employment.0 -

Your circumstances are not remotely similar. You did something stupid, yes. You are not whining about the fact that you have to work as a labourer, or that you are better than that. I can't see anybody saying that the OP shouldn't get another chance. What they are saying is that the attitude and approach of the OP is that they are entitled to it and that they should only get the chance that they deem suitable. The OP had also, since leaving prison, been off the radar and "self-employed " in some legally questionable ways, which is going to leave any employer wondering where they have been getting the money to support themselves. And the comment about the children was about setting an example now, by stopping expecting things to fall in line with his expectations and doing what is necessary to work, whether he likes that work or not.
You are actually proving exactly what everyone is saying! Sitting around with an "oh woe is me, I don't like flipping burgers so I won't" attitude is what leads to eight years of no employment record at all since leaving prison. You haven't done that - your are labouring, which I'd bet isn't your ultimate career aspiration, but you are doing what is needed to support your family and deal with your own mistakes - not expect everyone else to deal with them for you.
You also didn't notice that many people commenting on this thread are or have been actively involved in employing or supporting ex-offenders. Contrary to your thoughts, the comments are based on experience, not at all based on not giving offenders a chance!0
