This really makes me cross - the thing is if you own your home you will know when it's getting old and cranky (like me) but when you rent you expect at least the decency for the landlord to tell you it's in its last legs, or at least not leave you waiting warmly while everyone tells you to grow some.

how? If there are signs eg it starts making noises / failing to fire etc, then the tenant should notify the LL. The LL doesnn't live there.. If just because its old, that doesn't mean its on its last legs.
Well if it's a write off it was likely to be in not a very good state and, ok 'probably', the landlord knew it. They've made no effort to support the tenant in any way.
Probably based on what: the LL doesn't live there. They've made plenty of effort, they've contacted the relevant trades people in a more than reasonable timeframe. What more 'support' do you want.. not the LL's job.

my parents had no hot water for 6 weeks, guess what they owned the property and the gas engineer took that long to come and get a new one, note the boiler lasted 26 years.

People can't live without hot water, what shall we do?

My MIL could categorically not cope in her house for 6 weeks without heating. She would live with us  and she was born before the war so she's pretty tough.

You gotta just love the alternative extreme views that spout forth in a thread like this. On both sides!

Notably missing is the OP who has not been back. Have they followed advice? Has the problem been resolved? Are their fngers so cold they can't type any longer?

Will we have to wade through another 20 posts of irate opinions from uninvolved wierdos like me before finally finding out what happens.

Log in next week. Same batty-time, same batty-channel.

Calling yourself a weirdo does detract from the highly likely possibility that you're calling me one :p

It's my experience that if I call others 'wierdos' I get spanked by the Mods.

If I call myself a wierdo I avoid the spanking. Oh! hang on, I'm doing this the wrong way round........

I would be asking for a daily update.

The whole world would be grinding to a halt if everyone did that. As no one would get anything done that was productive in nature.

Perhaps the whole world doesn't revolve around the OP's boiler
