Growing a beard saves loads of money!
Keep bread in the freezer and take it out when needed. Slices take a few mins to defrost. Never throw bread away again!0 -
Beachcomber371 wrote: »Regarding using bread for feeding wild birds I must point out that bread is not very nutritious and wild birds cannot survive on it alone especially in Winter they need the fats and oils found in nut and seeds. So therefore it is difficult to economise with bird foods and even some cheap peanuts contain aflatoxins which can kill birds. But you can feed them fat used from cooking meat and left over meat scraps/chicken carcases etc.. also uneaten fruit, apple cores etc. are all excellent.:)
I new to bird feeding - what are aflatoxins in peanuts and should people beware of them too?
Thanks.0 -
When you buy milk, shampoo, fabric softener, or other liquids in clear containers make sure you search the supermarket shelves for the one which is full right up. With milk especially there is often a big difference!0

As someone has said, put all soap in pump dispensers. It limits the amount used specially with baby bath etc, when you squeeze some out in a rush with a small child in the bath. Even better if you foam it on a sponge, as it goes even further. Likewise with these trendy "body puffs" they help the soap go further and get you cleaner.
Put cd's dvd's in the freezer overnight. Don't know why but they resist the scratches better.
ALways buy dilutable screenwash - it's bit of a bind diluting it, but go to the the right petrol station and the water is free. Also make sure that screenwash is topped up before a service, as a garage will charge you for a top up at daft prices. Also buy screenwash in spring from supermarkets when they clear their shelves. lasts till winter, but at half price etc.0 -
On the subject of cosmetics. buy a lipbrush, when your favourite lipstick gets low you can get another couple of months out of what is left in the tube.0

Sorry oliveoyl, I have duplicated your post about lipstick, this was not intentional ( I just had not read it ) this is something I have been doing for years, also the lipstick goes on better with a brush.0

My first time on here, so apolgies if I mess it up
If using washing up gloves, ond one wears out before the other, or if you only need one, to get to a particular dirty area, then don't waste the other one, just turn inside out & it will fit the other hand.

A poison created by moulds particularly in hot damp tropical countries.
It rots the liver.
Peanuts can be contaminated with it and tend to taste bitter. Such nuts can be sold as animal feed, because the animal is going to be killed long before its liver gives up.
However feeding such nuts to garden birds might shorten their lives.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aflatoxins
"The aflatoxin problem was first recognized in 1960, when there was a severe outbreak of a disease referred as "Turkey 'X' Disease" in UK, in which over 100,000 turkey poults died. The cause of the disease was shown to be due to toxins in peanut meal infected with Aspergillus flavus and the toxins were named as aflatoxins."0 -
If your paint brushes get hard,Mix a solution of laundry powder and boiling water and let the brushes soak in it. They will soften and a lot of the hard paint can be got out.
Obviously if they are a solid block of paint,it wont result in a perfectly straight brush but when you have those which you thought were clean when you put them away and are all hard, it will work.
For cleaning brushes, first paint old newspapers with the dirty brush until no more paint will come out, then when you use your white spirit, it will not get so dirty.
For making those small paints pots that you get in kits last longer, oils or acrylics...put a little bit of cling film in on top of the remaining paint to stop the air in the half empty pot drying out the medium.Works for ceramic paints too.
If you are painting and have some mixed in a palette, you can cover the wet mixed painty palette over with clingfilm to resume where you left off next day.
The paint will still be wet.
Felt colouring pens can sometimes be revived by removing the felt colour core and standing the end in a little water in a saucer. The water climbs the felt core and forces the remaining ink up to the other end. Put the core back with the colourful end towards the pen nib.
Keep the plastic table cloths you have for kids parties or the ones with a rip. When you have babies in the house, you can use them as mess catchers under the high chair for all that flung food.
Also handy for putting under a good cloth tablecloth to save the furniture incase of spilss.
When they are really far gone, they can make good cloths for crafting on.
Old plastic tarpaulins from camping can do the same job or can be made into a thin sitting mat for days out in the countryside.0 -

i also do this, you can use a cottonbud if you don't have a lipbrush, it's just as good
boil the kettle once, fill your flask and use this through the morning/afternoon for hot drinks, saves continously boiling the kettle which is (i'm told) one of the most energy-thirsty applicances in the home0
