You can save money on milk by buying a larger amount than you would normally need (i.e. 4-pint container instead of 2-pints - try to time this with a special offer!) - decant the excess into easily washable containers, and freeze it. When you need some of your frozen store, take it out and place in a sinkful of water - it should defrost in half a day or so. Plastic juice or smoothie bottles, or jam jars can be reused for storing the milk - just make sure you thoroughly clean them!

Save cooking stock, gravies and sauces in ice cube containers. Then you can just break off the right amount you need next time you are cooking. Note though that stronger tasting stocks, soups, etc can lose flavour if left too long this way and any frozen liquid should be thoroughly boiled before consumption to be on the safe side.
:o Keep trying.........................what else is there to do? :o

My husband has been doing this for ages - I think he heard about it on the radio.

Apparently metal has a 'memory' and when a razor blade is blunt, it is not really, if you leave it for a while it will straighten out and will become sharp again.

I think your husband must have heard one of those urban myths that masquerade as fact ("factoids", as they call them on the Steve Wright show), like the "everyone swallows two spiders per year" thing :rotfl:.

The edge of the blade will never sharpen itself, because it has been nicked and the sharpness worn off the cutting edge. 'Dints' won't straighten themselves out either, as they are deformations in the metal.

:exclamati When using loo roll, help save the trees and use both sides.

Assuming this is not a joke and readers are not squeamish, tear off a continuous piece of 4 sheets, use then fold in two so clean sheets are exposed and then again fold and use. Not a joke, I have done this since skint student days, it really does save on loo paper and is quite hygenic.

One square for a weee, two for a pooh, if you need more---god bless you!
  • Fruit juice and milk can be diluted with water by up to one third and will still taste good. And don't forget to rinse out the empty carton with a little water and use this as well.:)
  • And while we're being brazen and talking about going to the loo........
A German friend of mine used this rhyme to train her children to save water on flushing:
If it's brown, flush it down.
If it's yellow, let it mellow

Doesn't save money but helps save the environment - if you can bear to follow her advice!
  • i always do the tootpaste one

rinse the last dribbles of diluting juice out of the bottle with water & put this into my juice too,

run mascara, nail varnish that type of thing when it has gone all clumpy / you don't think theres much left under a really hot tap for a little while/ leave to sit in hot, hot water, good as new :D

Beware of a build up of lime scale "round the bend" (It can be removed during your holidays with "Spirits of Salts" or "Battery Acid" (Hydrochloric/Sulphuric acid)) better still "P" in the compost maker, as recommended on "Gardeners' World" - The worms love it.

The little rhyme was more or less mandatory in California, when population pressure and increased wealth kept on causing water shortages.

  • I ditched my multi blade razor for a safety razor. blades are pence each, last a long time and have far less waste than multi-blades/disposables.
