The noise a wheel bearing makes starts out quietly, though the longer it's left, the louder it becomes.
This one came on loud, in very short order, and didn't really change.

It's best described as a whirring, droning sound in the distance when the car is on the move and the faster you drive the louder it should become.
    Yep, on that.

    Not really around corners.
Nope. Think about the loads, especially on a double-race bearing, as many are. Turn one way, you load the inner more than the outer. Turn the other, vice-versa.
Wheel bearings are also great at throwing their voices...

The tyre wear could well be caused by your driving having knocked the tracking out, so that's not relevant.

This may not have been caused by wheel bearings, so there could be another issue, or it could be another issue altogether.

    Who said it was?

I dont think it was caused by wheel bearings. Chances are it just needed tracked.

I dont associate inner edge tyre wear with wheel bearings.

Our Mercedes took 2 front tyres @ 9,000 miles because the tracking was badly out and caused them to wear prematurely to the inside edges.

Wheel bearings were fine though :)

    Stuff

Isnt it a shame when people are proven wrong they cant just simply say "actually, come to think about it, you both have a point, i've learned something new today" or similar? No, they have to abandon the thread entirely rather than - god forbid - accept they were wrong.

OP, you can forget about a warranty claim under any 3rd party warranty that came with the vehicle. The usual list of exclusions will rule out just about anything that might need replacing. Which, on a 9 year old Antara, could be everything.
You say you are 'no mechanic', so what questions did you ask about the condition of the vehicle, and did you examine the service history and MOT?
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

These threads are to help people including the OP, he has lots of information to think about and which information will turn out to be correct, only the OP will know.
They will hopefully reply when they know more.

He has already been told by his mechanic the issue we are discussing is a wheel bearing, this is borne out by the experience of Adrian and myself and wholly in line with our expectations of the symptoms being experienced.

You could just maybe take on board that you learned something new yesterday? ;)
