I've looked up in google and don't think that M3100 and E650 are GPS loaded...0

it is an excellent system and even works on the passenger seat of my car.
A couple of things to make sure you do to enhance your N95 GPS. Always have the keypad slid out, as the receiver is located there. Make sure you have firmware version V12 loaded and A-GPS switched on.
Could you please explain how to get V12 on the phone? I've decided to buy a 2nd hand N95 (can't afford the N95 8 GB) and use my 2GB micro SD Card with Tom tom navigation SW installed on it. Is A-GPS N95's internal GPS receiver?
The reviews on net talk of N95's GPS not being very good as well as costly... Does it cost to use GPS on N95? can I install Tom Tom or do I've to use Nokia's proprietary GPS SW for its internal GPS receiver?
Many thanks for your help in advance...0 -
n95 built in gps would only find me after 5mins of not moving, my new cario 3 finds me in my room within 20seconds0

Right, A-GPS is assisted GPS and uses the phone signal to give the GPS a rough location (within a mile) to give it a headstart on where to look for the satellites. It means the GPS can get a lock much quicker and in tougher conditions. It is part of the N95 but only comes into play with V12 firmware.
The N95 has it's own built in GPS, must other phone require a Bluetooth dongle to be connected to the phone. I've got a Garmin Extrex Vista and I can tell you, the N95 is good. The maps are free, you only pay if you want turn by turn voice directions, if you just want a GPS with colour maps, then there is no charge. The satnav voice directions cost £45 for 3 years.

See my post (post no. 10) for instructions on how to debrand your firmware and update it to the latest. If you don't want to debrand it, then just follow the firmware update process which starts after the debranding instructions.0 -
Do you know how many channels GPS receiver in Orbit (or N95) is? I think more the number of channels, better the reception, is it right?
Does it cost you anything to run your GPS on orbit?
Cheers...
Off the top of my head I don't know how many channels it is. But, recently there seems to be a lot of 16-channel receivers. Given that each hemisphere only has 12 satellites in view, this is a bit overkill (24 active satellites in the constellation, plus the EGNOS/WAAS ones). You need 4 for a reasonable 3D-fix, but will often see more and get a better position as a result (however the improvement between 4 and, say, 8 is fairly minimal. Between 8 and 10 is negligable). Anything 12 channel is therefore fine.
The GPS chip is integrated into the Orbit, therefore there are no network charges for use.
Most GPS software (i.e. CoPilot) has a facility to enter your current rough location (usually a town), which resets the chipset to that location in order to pickup a quicker first fix, similar to what AGPS was described as above. It'll still have to download the Ephemeris data though. There is a QuickGPS app with the Orbit (or possibly with CoPilot - not sure) that downloads this via the internet for you to again speed things up. That can be done via ActiveSync or WiFi so again, doesn't have to cost.0 -
Just got my XDA Orbit today... only had a quick play but very pleased with it so far... I previously had a Palm Tungsten T5 running TomTom with a bluetooth receiver, but obviously had to have a seperate phone and I vener had the bluetooth box with me when I needed it (walking around cities etc)...
So now I am very pleased with the Orbit, does everything my old palm, gps receiver and phone does and more, all in a shell not much bigger then my K800i....
Very pleased - just a shame it costs so much to get it (on contract or ebay although saying that, if a Tom Tom standalone is £150 then you'd be much better with an Orbit off ebay for same price.
