BT want to charge to move a cable

Hello Everyone...help please.

We have a pole in our front garden with 1 Electric cable and 1 BT cable on it. We need the pole moving to our back garden so we can build a garage (cables currently too low). The Electric company have installed a new pole in our back garden and will connect their cable free of charge once we have paid to dig trenches to bury the cables from the original pole, however Openreach charged £300 to send an Engineer out to look at it (5 minutes of his time) and will then charge almost £2000 to reconnect their cable to the new pole. Neither of these cables service our property, they go the the houses behind us. This is a huge unfair cast, can we get the cable moved without paying? Fingers crossed someone can help :)

But the electric company are also charging you
  • No, the Electric company have installed the new pole and will connect their cables to it free of charge
  • Why should I as a BT customer pay for your pole to be moved?
  • Sorry, not sure my post was clear. BT are charging us to remove their cable from the old pole and connect to the new pole. However, the BT cable does not come into our house....why should we pay to have cables moved that are not connected to our property? The Electricity company has already installed a new pole free of charge...again the electric cable does not supply our property.

OP has said the electric cable aspect is free of charge
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

Because the people whose houses ARE connected to the cables may wish to continue to have a phone service after your new pole has been put in.
  • Yes, we are paying to have both BT and Electric cables buried up to the new pole, but BT/Openreach are charging £2000 for the same job that the Electric company has done for free.

    No he didn't:

Just because the electric company won't charge for moving the cables doesn't oblige Openreach (not BT) to do the same.
