  • BBC Iplayer detects an disallows VPN. Its very easy to detect IP cloaking. You are allowed to listen to BBC radio on iRadio though.

Can anyone advise a good free one that works on Laptops and Phones please, more for security when travelling than copyright theft.

The free ones that I have tried seem pretty poor. The paid for one I currently use streams BBC TV via the BBC iPlayer without a problem, it’s a bit of a cat and mouse game between the VPN providers and the BBC.

The Radioplayer app by UK Radioplayer Ltd, also won’t play BBC radio stations overseas, unless you fool it with a VPN too.

These VPNs are very handy for those of us who travel abroad a lot.

    Thanks.

iPlayer Radio is fine for BBC radio without a VPN, I've spoken to the BBC and theres no restrictions to licence payers to listen to radio outside the UK, just programmes on iPlayer. Luckily someone kindly uploads Question Time promptly to YouTube each week for me :-)

It depends on why you want it.
I run openvpn on my router. This allows me to maintain my home webserver from anywhere without exposing ports other than http and https. It would also allow me to watch BBC from a tropical beach in the extremely unlikely event i chose to. If the home router can't do that then the raspberry pi option would. I also use it if on open WiFi but mostly stick to 4g these days as it is usually better anyway.

I also took a multi year Nordvpn sub some time ago when i ran kodi in the unlikey event failing to do so may result in unwanted attention. I got fed up to the teeth with constantly needing to fiddle with the kodi add ons so no longer use it and stick to having torrents run by a debrid service followed by straight http download so won't renew.

For occasional use a free but download limited service like tunnelbear could work for location disguise.

  • The link to Black Friday deals is to an American site, or at least it’s priced in US dollars. These kind of deals appear all the time as “loss leaders” for VPNs, Internet security, etc.

Take your pick from Nord, CyberGhost or Express. Check out phone apps, video streaming, ability to appear home when overseas, etc. I use CyberGhost, it’s not a particular favourite, it just happened to be a good price months ago.

Personally I run my own VPN server.

I rent a cheap VPS and as well as running a VPN server I host my own email and cloud storage amongst other things. I use Linode as my provider but there are plenty of places that will rent you a server for $5 a month if you have the technical know-how to set it all up.

BBC Iplayer uses a combination of browser settings and cookies as well as IP Geo location, I have family abroad and they found that if you accidentally connect without the VPN it sets cookies that need ccleaner to remove.

The problem for people is that most people use VPN to hide country so IP's are either non UK or suspicious.

One solution if you are travelling is to use a router like Draytek to create a VPN to your home router so all internet traffic is routed via your private tunnel to your UK Router, ideally another Draytek.
