Insurance renewal

  • I read your previous posts as saying that they sent an email to your old email address to tell you what would happen when renewal was due.
    Have I misunderstood that?

If the policy you choose has auto renewal the easiest option would be to write it in your diary or set an alert on your phone / email / computer.

Sorry not very good at this forum business and can't quote and reply to individuals. What does qed? Mean?

Maybe I explained it incorrectly. They did say that in their letter. I've just been searching in old email account and found the email from them as above.

The reason I queried opting out of auto renewal is because many years ago I had the same experience except I wrote to the insurance company saying I didn't wish to renew and they denied receiving it and took money from my account anyway and I had weeks of constant telephone calls demanding money and were very abusive to me on the phone. So I don't really trust that they follow instructions anyway. Plus it's just another chore to do when I know from the outset that I won't want to renew. I get frustrated hanging on phones for ages trying to cancel something that I never wanted and then often get ignored anyway.

I seem to end up waiting on the phone half my life when dealing with anything.

Managed to access old account and found renewal email

, we wrote to you about your insurance renewal to let you know that we would be taking payment of £347.11 (Premiums include Insurance Premium Tax at the current rate) on your renewal date. Unfortunately we were unable to take this payment.

We want to ensure that you are covered so we've enclosed your certificate of insurance and schedule. If you wish to continue your insurance through us we will required a payment of £347.11 within the next 7 days.

We accept Mastercard, Visa, Switch, Delta, and Maestro or we may be able to offer instalment options. If payment is to be made using a third party's card, we must speak to the cardholder to confirm their details. You can make a payment by calling our dedicated Renewal Line now on 01733 308320 .

We must point out that it is an offence under the Road Traffic Act to keep, use or permit the use of a motor vehicle on the public highway or other public place unless adequate insurance cover is in force. So unless you make a payment or take out other insurance, you will not be able to use your vehicle or leave it on a public highway after that date without a valid insurance policy being in force.

If you'd like to discuss your renewal or you have any questions, we'd be happy to talk things through with you. Please call us on 01733 308320 we're here 8:00am - 8:00pm Monday to Friday, 9:00am - 5:00pm Saturdays and 10:00am - 4:00pm Sundays and Bank Holidays.

Tell them where to go. They've sent you an email stating that you need to pay to continue the insurance. You didn't pay. Therefore the insurance does not continue. You owe them nothing.

You could contact them and point this out, or you could just ignore all further communications.

Did you die an hour after coming out of the womb?

Depends what the charges are for. Remember this is the second email the OP will have received, the first one will be "we are renewing for £xxx on xxx as agreed by yourself in original contract".

Therefore charges could well be failed payment charges which would also have been agreed by OP (or could be for the time insured up until second email, for which the OP would have been insured and would have been able to claim, if they'd still had the car).

Comp, I'd be less worried bout the £100 and more about the fact you will have to declare this going forwards... there's almost always a question about cancelled insurance on application forms

You owe the money simple as that.

Look at it from another POV. They send you the information about the renewal, you do nothing, they cancel the policy, you still have the car, go out and have an accident, make a claim and they say your not insured.

You go ballistic as it's meant to be auto renewed, who's to blame then? Bottom line is this isn't a new thing, it's standard practice.

Reason they didn't try to charge your card is because the don't keep card details, your supposed to contact them and either cancel or pay, you did nothing.
