Insurance renewal

We bought a small car as a run around and after owning it for just under 12 months sold it. We paid the year premium up front as we didn't want to get caught in the auto renewal palava.

Anyway, the insurance company sent auto renewal papers to an email address we no longer use and automatically renewed even though they did not take any payment as they obviously didn't have bank details.

They wrote saying we owed them £50 and said we need to prove we sold the car. Then wrote saying we owed them £100 and are now phoning several times a day saying And passed it over to their debt collectors.

I don't understand how they can renew a policy for a car we don't have and charge us for a policy we didn't want. What are our rights please?

You failed to notify them you sold the car and to cancel the policy. Thats why they are entitled to charge you.

You didn't want it.. Why did you not tell them that? They are not psychic.

They will pester you for a while and then pass it down to debt collectors who will also pester you. They have upto 6 years to pester you before taking you to court.

After 6 years your safe though.

Hmm well, you're a fool for deciding to no longer use an email address which you sent important policy documents to.

That aside, please provide us with more info:

    1. What did the original policy documents state regarding that? You can access them by either using the email address or asking for copies from the company.

    2. Did you prove to them that you have sold the car? If not, why not?

We didn't notify them because we had paid in full upfront, had no idea they could automatically renew without some sort of a deposit and credit agreement.

I can't find anything on the 20 pages of policy information regarding automatic renewal.

Well to be fair it may not be in your policy, apologies for that (policy may only state what is and isn't covered in your insurance).

But still, surely you agreed it at the time (or documents sent at the time to that effect)? If they didn't initially send documents about auto-renewal, you *may* have a case but it is extremely diluted by the fact that you were sent auto renewal papers by email just before it took place. It is pretty much your error in that respect I'm afraid, but if you want to explore the shred of hope I have hinted at then you may be better suited with either a solicitor or deny liability and defend yourself against them in court (DON'T stop using your email address if you do that :rotfl: ).

When your policy is due to renew...
In good time before your renewal date we will provide you with an invitation which details the premium and the terms and conditions for renewal of your policy. We will review the premium with your current insurer and we will also work with our panel of insurers to see if we are able to nd a cheaper alternative than your current renewal quote.
If you are paying by monthly instalments in most cases you won’t need to do anything, we will renew your insurance policy as per our invitation and continue to collect the monthly instalments from your bank as usual.
If you pay for your insurance in full by credit or debit card, in most cases we will attempt to take payment using the securely held card details we have on le.
You will need to contact us before your cover runs out if you wish to use an alternative method or you do not want to renew your policy with us. If for some reason we are unable to automatically renew your policy, we will contact you by e-mail in good time before your renewal date to let you know what needs to be done in order to continue your cover with iGO4.

Managed to access old account and found renewal email

, we wrote to you about your insurance renewal to let you know that we would be taking payment of £347.11 (Premiums include Insurance Premium Tax at the current rate) on your renewal date. Unfortunately we were unable to take this payment.

We want to ensure that you are covered so we've enclosed your certificate of insurance and schedule. If you wish to continue your insurance through us we will required a payment of £347.11 within the next 7 days.

We accept Mastercard, Visa, Switch, Delta, and Maestro or we may be able to offer instalment options. If payment is to be made using a third party's card, we must speak to the cardholder to confirm their details. You can make a payment by calling our dedicated Renewal Line now on 01733 308320 .

We must point out that it is an offence under the Road Traffic Act to keep, use or permit the use of a motor vehicle on the public highway or other public place unless adequate insurance cover is in force. So unless you make a payment or take out other insurance, you will not be able to use your vehicle or leave it on a public highway after that date without a valid insurance policy being in force.

If you'd like to discuss your renewal or you have any questions, we'd be happy to talk things through with you. Please call us on 01733 308320 we're here 8:00am - 8:00pm Monday to Friday, 9:00am - 5:00pm Saturdays and 10:00am - 4:00pm Sundays and Bank Holidays.
