Barclays continuously send new cards.

Anyone else with Barclays having the same issue as me where Barclays constantly send them a new card because their security system has flagged something up as "potential fraud"?

Getting the point now where I might switch banks as this is the 3rd time in a year I'm having to upate all my bank details with various companies because Barclays can't control their security systems. I get that it's supposed to keep your account safe, but I use my debit card in the same Barclays ATMs every week and any bills and purchases I make are reputable companies which aren't fraudulent. Speaking to them on the phone is just met with "I get that sir but it's an automatic security feature blah blah we can't help you". Farcical.

I've been with Barclays since Noah was a boy and I've never had this happen to me. I can see your point, though, it would be a PITA to keep having to change your card details.
I came into this world with nothing and I've got most of it left.

I want to know what on earth they think you're doing with your card!

Something about your transaction patterns seems to set them off. Do you use the card at any less well-known places regularly? It's possible that one of them may be a bit leaky for card details.

  • They said they sent it today and the only time I've used it this week was to withdraw £30 from one of their own ATMs, bought a DVD off of Amazon from a well known company or when I've used contactless in ASDA. Nothing has gone in or out of my account that I don't know about, so I can't really see how or why their system would flag up fraudulent activity.

The most annoying thing is they don't try and contact you to ask if the "potential fraud" was actually you or not. They just automatically block your card and send a new one. It's a very flawed system. And they're customer service is no help at all.

I'd ditch and switch then personally. Unless you somehow keep flashing around your card around stupid places to the point it ends up on a database of hot cards I can't see why they'd keep doing this. I've certainly never had it with any bank, even Barclays!

This sounds like an irritation you could do without.

    Look for a switching bonus?

  • Been happening to me as well. They send a new debit card and don't tell me how exactly my debit card has been compromised. Received at least 4 debit cards in the last year or so.

It's a pain. I don't use it on any dodgy website and as far as I know none of the places I have used it on have been hacked since the last change of debit card so have no idea.

Can't switch and it's my main bank account so I am stuck with this annoying habit of theirs.

It might amaze you but most fraud is confirmed on well used sites such as John Lewis/ mobile co's etc. Card details are most often compromised where you physically use the card.

It is odd that if they can't contact you they stop and replace your card without notification. That would generate a complaint from most people. As could leave you stuck without a card if not at home.

A switch would not be a issue on your main account. It is something millions of people have done with no problems and they whole point of the switching process.
All you need to do is contact the bank you want to move to and they deal with it all for you.
    Life in the slow lane
  • I can see that this is an ancient thread revisited but you have no idea what is going on behind the scenes. You may think you are only using bona fide retailers and the like, but what you may not see is the number of Authorisation requests made against your debit card that Barclays declines because it has identified them as fraud and saved you from having your money extracted from your account. Giving you a new card therefore makes sense. If it happens to you several times, you may have a security issue and might need to look at the way you handle your cards and banking.

Rubbish, you can switch if you want too or open up an account elsewhere and use that for buying from websites or get a credit card.
