Now TV Smart Box

OK so it comes down to whether or not you want a cable.
If you have freesat, then you can add another freesat box* in the kitchen, it will need a cable to come from the dish though.
There is a technology branded as "Freeview play" which gives old TV Guide style viewing through a Smart device.
This would use the internet instead of a cable.
Unfortunately because everyone wants on-demand TV now, there's not much of a market for this technology and so devices are not cheap.
Do you already have a TV for the kitchen? If not the cheapest / simplest method would be to choose a TV with "Freeview Play" built in.
* Actually many modern TVs come with a satellite receiver already built in, so you might not need a separate box.0 -
The smart tv is better without an additional box0

No Freeview in that room, but there is an aerial for Freesat, which I have never used before. I had the aerial checked and it works, but I was looking for simpler options.
Now TV, if it doesn't need an aerial or monthly payment, would be good. Otherwise I may need to get a Freesat box.
All I want to watch are the basics, terrestrial channels and rolling news. I don't want an entertainment pass.
You can buy an old Roku for under 20GBP(which is from what NOW TV boxes were created. Now TV boxes were just locked down Roku.) via eBay.
Then to use the Roku TVPlayer application to stream the channels via your TV; https://tvplayer.com/channel-availability
If you have a good internet signal where the TV is located, it could work.0 -

I don't really care which method I use. I just want to be able to watch basic TV in the room.
I have an electric socket for two plugs, and 2 cables for Freesat. I have never used Freesat before as I have Freeview in the house, but there is no Freeview cable in the kitchen, and I don't plan to get one.
The TVs I have seen with Freesat built in are HUGE! I only want a little TV.
Could I use Freeview Play without a Freeview aerial?0 -
Not sure if it helps : When I moved into my flat , there was a sky dish already fitted on the wall outside . There were a couple of cables in the living room already there , if I wanted to use sky.
Same as the op, I don't / didn't want sky . I went to John Lewis ,and purchased a recordable humax set top box . ( They had a sale on and I got a now tv with 3 month pass ,but we'll leave that for now)
The set top box didn't work however, because the dish was disconnected . I got ripped off when I paid to have the dish active again. What annoyed me at the time , was trying to find the cost of having the dish reconnected and finding who would do it.
So bear in mind , it will cost for a connection as well as a set top box for freesat ,which isn't free to start off with:mad:
If you already have freesat installed in one room, to get it installed into another room as well will probably cost also . How much more, I don't know .
Regarding now tv: it works off of my router. Be aware that you must remember to cancel just before end of month 2 ,or sky will keep taking direct debits from you . I don't really use it, but if there is a must have series, I may use it when a promotional offer comes along.
Sky email offers frequently .
These techie topics can get quite messy . Hope this helps anyway:)0 -

I have freesat in one room only, and I had it checked when I moved in so I know it works. I'm just not sure what I need to do to get TV in the room, and whether there are any other options apart from Freesat.
The only Freesat TVs I can find and huge, and I just want a small one which is why I thought of a small TV with a box. However if something like NOW TV could do the job without needing any further cables or a monthly fee then I would consider that. I don't want an entertainment pass, just the basics.0
