Space-saving door ideas

What about splitting the cupboard in two.
Have an open bottom bit for kids stuff/trays.
The top part can use the current door cut shorter to lock off the stuff you don't want toddler access.
Obviously the split is above bed hight so the door can open.0 -
Splitting the cupboard up seemed like a great idea but when I looked at it in person I realised the bottom section would be completely inaccessible due to the bed. Thanks for the suggestion though

We're now looking at having a door which opens normally but starts above the height of bedding. And then the section under it will be blocked off by a panel of wood at the front, below the door. However it'll still be accessible (albeit with some faff) by reaching into it from above.0 -

If you make the bottom part of the cupboard accessible by reaching down into it, you could use this section to store summer duvets or things you don't need access to very often.Thrifty Till 50 Then Spend Till the End

Hmm good thinking, I like that idea!
I was struggling to think of what that space could be used for. I'm also glad you understood what I meant - I wasn't sure if my description was as clear as mud. 0 -
Because the bottom of the door is some way off the floor, could you still have a door at the bottom part as long as the bottom of the bottom door is above the base of the bed (I hope that makes sense). So to access it you would only have to swizz round the mattress and not move the bed itself.Thrifty Till 50 Then Spend Till the End

Or .... depending on the age of the child who will be occupying the room, make the bottom part a bookcase for them which will be at the end of their bed.Thrifty Till 50 Then Spend Till the End

What's on the other side of the cupboard? At the back?
Does it back on to a landing/corridor?
Could you board up the bedroom door & access it from the other side? (Not much help if it's an outside wall though!)Lurking in a galaxy far far away...0 -
Good idea about the bottom opening being above the height of the bed base Ms Chocahol (I understand what you mean don't worry). I suppose sliding the mattress round wouldn't be too much of a big deal, especially if it's for items not used very often.
It's not an outside wall Dark Star but unfortunately is above the stairs (bulkhead cupboard), so access would involve shimmying up a ladder over the stairs
That would have worked great if not though! 0
