Thanks very much for all the replies! Having had a look at them all I'm thinking the Marley folding doors might be a good option, especially seeing as they do a lockable version. Time for a bit more research and some detailed measurements...0

How about a sliding door [similar to office cupbaord doors] made of slats of some kind? I'm sure google will help you there

The tambour doors look good but possibly quite pricey? I also can't tell whether they would work on our cupboard as there would need to be a/some housing unit(s) for the doors to roll up inside and because it's an actual doorway it's not completely flat (not like the inside of a kitchen cupboard for example). Does anyone have experience of fitting tambour doors to a built-in cupboard like this?
I'm going to attach a few pics as it's difficult to explain the set-up in words...0 -

Please ignore the mess inside the cupboard! Part of the new door job is obviously going to be sorting out the cupboard contents!0

What about a double door? The doors would only open half the distance, and only about as much space as you'd need to stand in front of the cupboard anyway ...?(Nearly) dunroving0

What about a stable door so the bottom part stays shut and you open the topThrifty Till 50 Then Spend Till the End

Just looked at your pics (I hadn't before I commented above) - could you move the door to the side?Thrifty Till 50 Then Spend Till the End

If you will be keeping part used paint tins etc in that cupboard make sure that everything is tightly sealed as you don't want unpleasant or potentially toxic fumes leaking into a bedroom. It is a small risk but best avoided.
If you can't store them elsewhere, maybe you should seal the tins inside plastic bags.0 -
Moving the door to the side would have been great bur unfortunately the cupboard isn't deep enough, so the wall at the side isn't wide enough to accommodate a door. Not one that we could fit through anyway!
Double door is good idea but because of the room layout, once a bed is in there it will only be about 10cm away from the cupboard front. Obviously not enough room to stand in front of, so we'll have to sit/climb on the bed to access the cupboard contents. Not ideal but because it's such a small room it makes the best use of the space.
Good point about the paint tins etc. Up to now that room has just been a dumping ground so not a major issue (although they are all tightly sealed). But I'll bear that in mind once there's someone sleeping in there.0
