Unless you are carrying lots of luggage and or people then why take your car?

Perhaps because the alternative would be leaving it in Liverpool!

Don't forget they drive on the right on Thursdays.

I'm Irish and you need to get your facts straight :naughty:

OP, we only drive on the right on Thursdays during Daylight Savings Time.

Everything else on the thread is true though, especially about the leprechauns

I really enjoy holidaying in the Republic of Ireland and the driving there, but do be aware that some of the road surfaces in rural areas are even worse than ours.
I used to think that good grammar is important, but now I know that good wine is importanter.

Drove around Ireland for 10 days, no problems at all. Helps my car you can change the speedo to KMPH from MPH and the satnav had all the road speeds. We avoided all the tolls to get to the ferry but only because my other half was navigating and thought she knew better than the satnav so took a long winded route but is possible to do it without tolls. Technically you need a GB sticker if car hasn't got the euro flag on the plate but I saw plenty without it.

Oh an check regulations, IIRC you need a road triangle for breakdowns in your car

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

It's the same as driving in the UK.

As for the cashless tolls, don't bother paying them. You're just wasting money. The toll collection authority has absolutely zero jurisdiction in the UK. They will get their money by selling to a UK debt collector, who will subsequently try to get their money by sending a few toothless threatening letters before giving up.

OP, please do the decent thing and pay any due tolls.

You will be a guest in that country and you should respect that.

remember to update your headlights for driving in a foreign land, go round roundabouts the opposite direction to the UK and drive on the right. The drink drive limit is also far more lenient .
Remember to notify your insurer that you are going abroad too.

None of that applies in the Republic of Ireland.

You may have difficulties sorting out the serious from the humorous replies here.
I have just spent 2 weeks criss-crossing the border between NI and Eire.
If you have a non-NI UK registered car you need a UK sticker with the EU stars on your number plate. NI cars don't need it as NI and Eire have a common travel area.
Some non-motorway roads have a small lane on the left marked by a solid white line, this is not a hard shoulder but is used for pulling over to let faster traffic overtake.
The further west you go the more place names will be in Irish/Gaelic and may be different from road atlases.
