Vet fees can be expensive, but we are always given an estimate of costs. In my experience estimates are consistently on the low side. The most obvious example was being referred to a specialist diagnostic centre. They told us the scan would be £1200 and the bill was for £1500. It was paid by our insurance, which helped, but more importantly the outcome was very good, so we certainly regarded it as worth it.

While the vet gives the estimate, the person left with explaining the cost is the receptionist. She often seems very nervous about that task, which may put the customer on alert.
