I am a housekeeper at the local NHS hospital. They employ lots of teenagers to mostly cover the evening shift of 4.30pm-7.30pm on a zero hours basis. The rate of pay is currently around £8.92 per hour for all ages. In addition there are weekend enhancements of time and a half on a Saturday and double time on a Sunday. If they don't mind cleaning in a hospital setting its a really good way of earning decent money. Lots of the younger staff come back during the holidays too when they are at university. That's the beauty of zero hours contracts! Check the NHS jobs website for local vacancies.
  • Last time I looked at work it was nearly £8 per hour once your training books were signed off for Whitbread owned only Costa Coffee stores for anyone over 16.
The Franchised outlets were about 40% less so make sure to check when applying. Had a few jumped ship from franchises to corporate stores on that basis.
Get a discount card after 3 months.

    Good luck!
  • Sainsbury’s have just increased wages so that everyone starts at the same rate. A 16 year old will earn £9.20/hour which is far higher than NMW
  • Delivering monthly ‘what’s on’ type local magazines.

I worked in a Chinese at 16. Got the job a few weeks after my 16th birthday. Pay wasn't amazing, but I got a free Chinese after every shift and they let me have the occasional pint.... but don't tell the kids that :P

Was great fun though and I learnt some surprisingly useful lessons.

    17 I worked at McDonald's..... I don't recommend it.

I worked in Argos at 16/17! And it was actually quite good. Busy tho, esp if you work on the collection desk giving people their items. They used to employ lads to work in the stock room as it was a lot of heavy lifting (and i mean HEAVY lifting, like a snooker table)

Its Band 1 at the moment but I believe will change to Band 2 over the next 3 years. £17460 per annum plus weekend enhancements.

Band 1 is now very reasonable. Nice.

Consider applying for national chains, working hard, and keeping their noses clean. If they go onto uni there maybe the opportunity for work locally to where they are studying and transferring back for shifts at home in the holidays. I know of students who have done this.
