Number plate spacing?

After 20 years of having my plate with no problem the boys in blue sent me a FPN of £100. My plate is H1 1T WT. The reason I am angry is this. Before I bought the plate I went into my local police station and told them what I wanted to do. They said ok because I wasn't putting bolts in the wrong place and they could read it ok. I have been past countless speed camera vans, had police cars follow me and my wife has passed this van on numerous occasions without problem. On this particular morning at 8 am it was pouring with rain, no one speeding, so lets have a go at number plates. So those wanting to do it be careful it just depends on plods mood at the time.
Your plate is illegal as you fully well know, that you managed to avoid being pulled for that long is simply down to good luck.
Any car can be pulled over by the police if there is a fault (say a light out, illegal plate) or even just suspicious driving (say a sober driver driving home at 11:30pm doing exactly 30 or not indicating for a junction). If you fail the attitude test they can start picking you up on other things rather than a telling off.
Put your plate back to the way it's legally required to be and you won't have any issues.Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:
People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

It's not clear what you're angry about. Is it:
1. The police giving you wrong advice? Fair enough, but that's not their job. If you want legal advice, ask a lawyer.
2. Speed cameras not nicking you? That's not what they do: the clue is in the name.
3. Various officers not nicking you in the past? They've probably had other priorities: this is not the crime of the century. And they've saved you £hundreds.
4. Finally being caught after 20 years of blatant law-breaking?0 -
No reason is needed.
I didn't say there was, that was just an example of things that can flag the police attention and give them a reason to pull and talk to you. Someone with a legal car (insured, MOT, taxed) who drives well won't arouse suspicion and the police are more likely to pull someone with those sort of defectsSam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

I wouldn't even begin to "get" that "meaning" from it, tbh.
Nor me. It still looks like C140 PAL even with the "translation".
One that amused me was a Rolls Royce with MY A11.
Edit: Looks like the owner has downsized a bit in the 25 years since I saw it. The plate is now on a Mini Countryman Cooper SD.0 -

There's a blue rolls royce I see in Birmingham occasionally, plate says BUY GOLD or similar, can't remember how they do it but clearly dealing in gold has done well for them
