Number plate spacing?

I can only once remember the police taking any great interest in numberplate spacing - Which was a bit rich because it was in the run-up to bonfire night in one of the worst areas of town and the poor guys with the rulers measuring plates, numbers and spacing had a lot of fireworks hurled in their direction.
Also, two of my motorbikes over the years had plates/number spacing that was strictly illegal but not by a lot - Nothing was ever said on MOT and only a couple of passing comments by officers who were far more interested in other things.0 -
So how do people get away with it? Like I mentioned above, I see A LOT of them and more often than not, it's someone who looks very unassuming driving the car. A mum or dad or something. Not like it's a teen boy racer.
So they go to the effort of obtaining an illegally spaced plate (every time I've bought a plate online I've had to show my V5C, so not sure how they do it), and then remove the plate and replace it with a legal one every time it's MOTd?
And for what?! Seems like such an effort for no real reason.
Yes absolutely that. Some people run their cars with "show plates", dropped springs, tyre spacers, blue running lights, loud exhausts, tuned to burn richer fuel and they are put back to "as stock" for the MOT test and then have it all put back to go on the road as soon as the certificate is in their hands.
As far as "getting away with it" - many do, some get stopped by police, but they will never catch them all, and at most you'll be ordered to put the faults right, which is the same procedure as the MOT.(Although I could be wrong, I often am.)0 -

That’s not strictly true, you can get a fixed penalty notice or summons and repeat offenders with private plates can have the right to use them removed.0 -
Who knows the name of the company that has vans registered: S1 NKS, BAS 1N, DRA 1N (DRA 11N and DRA 111N too) LO 02 OLD and many more?
I wanted S1NKS but they got it first.I am a mortgage broker. You should note that this site doesn't check my status as a Mortgage Adviser, so you need to take my word for it. You're just giving the police a reason to pull you over.
If there is a police man driving around looking for someone to pull over, he spots you, maybe gives you a warning for your plate, but then he checks your tyres and finds one of them has an illegal split/crack/bulge and so you get 3 points on your licence.
Why give them a reason to pull you over?Changing the world, one sarcastic comment at a time.0 -
I read somewhere (quite possibly an earlier thread on MSE) that while it's extremely unlikely the police will pull you over just for this, if they should pull you over for a more serious motoring offence there's a good chance the illegal plates will be added to the list of charges.0

I really do get annoyed by personalised number plates sometimes.
I see a car regularly go past me has a number 12 where the numbers are close together and the 2 is slanted to make it look like an R.
And that's just the one - I see quite a few examples every day!Striving to clear the mortgage before it finishes in Dec 2028 - amount currently owed - £26,322.670 -

And look an even bigger Wayne Kerr when you've bought a cheap plate that looks/spells nothing like your name......these are generally sold for a couple of hundred quid and make the owner look a saddo because he/she has desperately moved black/orange screw head cover or 5 to S ,4 to H etc
At the end of the day if a stranger can't decipher/read your plate in 5 seconds its 5h1t0
