  • I too have recieved a letter. Very unhappy with Intrum Justitia, they claim i owe them 14.99. Which i know clearly i dont.
I spoke to one lady, really rude and was telling me she will blacklist me and take me to court. So i said back, i would like to see your evidence as clearly you havent got any as you dont even know what the debt is for!!!

So i then was fuming and i rang back. spoke to a guy who was really helpful and told me that they have had lots of these from britannia. I said im not paying it as ive never had it. and he agreed that they didnt have a leg to stand on and said nothing legal will happen with it. So im not going to worry about it. Ive sent them a letter stating i require proof of delivery from Britannia and they cant prove it.

So if anybody else get these stupid rediculous letters just ring them, say you dont owe anything as the account was settled and you will not pay anything until they send you proof of delivery from royal mail. Which they cant do!!! They have no case!!
  • Hi all

Just posting as I work for a company that is a creditor of Britannia. Basically their accounts were pretty poor (hence why they have probably gone into liquidation).

if you have proof, throw it at them. Basically Intrum Justitia are acting for the accountancy firm who are handling the liquidation and trying to get as much money back that was owed as possible. Only thing is, I don't think they know who owns what as a result of the bad accounting.

    Hope this helps a little.

  • hi

had another letter today mine has now gone up to £24.97 due to admin fee. My husband is now on the case and phoned ij to complain again. Said as my account was on hold from previous phone call not to worry about second letter. As my account was closed and i dont owe music and film anything they are now sending my account back to the receivers. I will let you know what happens.
  • Hi, I got one of these today, £7.47, and I havent bought anything for over a year, Problem is I cant prove it. I rang instrum and they were far from helpful, they cant tell me what the bill is for, and if I dont pay they stick on another £20 ! basically I see it as bullying me out of the money because If I dont pay it can mess my credit up, or the bill keeps building higher. I cant see any other way than just paying it. good luck to everyone who takes it all the way, but I cant risk having £20's added on willy nilly :(

I thought debt collection agencies could not persue a debt without proof of it.

Intrum are terrible on the phone they seem to have bad lines and shout a lot, espeically if you ask them to send signed credit agreements.
  • Oh yes, thats another good one. I will ask them for the agreement form i signed!!!
  • I TOO RECEIVED A LETTER FROM INTRUM JUSTICIA DATED 1ST NOVEMBER SAYING I OWED £19.48. I DONT OWE THEM ANYTHING SO I RANG A DEBT COUNSELLING SERVICE WHO ADVISED ME TO SEND A LETTER ASKING FOR PROOF OF MY DEBT AND A COPY OF THE CREDIT AGREEMENT. I SENT THE LETTER OF TO THEM.

TODAY I GET ANOTHER LETTER DATED 8TH NOVEMBER SAYING I NOW OWE THEM £26.98.
I WAS LIVID  SO I PHONED THEM AND TOLD THEM ABOUT THE LETTER THAT I SENT TO THEM AND THE WOMAN TOLD ME THAT THEY DO NOT HAVE TO SUPPLY PROOF TO ME. WITH THIS I TOLD HER THAT I WOULD BE CONTACTING TRADING STANDARDS AND PROMPTLY PUT THE PHONE DOWN ON HER

I AGAIN PHONED THE DEBT COUNSELLING SERVICE AND THEY HAVE NOW ADVISED ME TO CONTACT THE FINANCIAL ONBUDSMAN (0845 080 1800)
AND REPORT THIS COMPANY FOR HARRASSMENT. THEY TOLD ME THAT INTRUM JUSTICIA ARE BREAKING THE LAW BY REFUSING TO SEND PROOF OF THE DEBT AND THAT THE ONBUDSMAN WILL INVESTIGATE THE COMPANY.

SO ANYONE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEMS JUST PHONE THE ONBUDSMAN AND WE'LL SEE WHAT HAPPENS !!!
  • Something interesting I have noted is that apart from those who may have had the £20 charge levied no one appears to have had an outstanding amount of £20 or more levied.

We really are talking quite small amounts. I wonder just how many people have received these letters - they could rake in a small fortune!

I sent my request for a statement off on Monday - I dare say I'll get a demand for an excess payment of £20.

IJ do appear a dodgy outfit though their web site suggests they have some high profile clients.

  • I too received a letter from intrum requesting £17.48 for a debt to britannia...I have not belonged to britannia for 9 years! I called intrum on the day a received their letter and by then I owed £24.98!!! they said that they couldn't tell me any details of what the debt was for???

Thanks to various people's advice on this forum I contacted www.consumerdirect.com who were brilliant and informed me that they are not able to chase a 9 yr old debt with no proof of the original credit agreement. I read them out the suggested letter someone has posted quoting the consumer credit act 1974 and they said it was great wording and to definately send this with the £1 as suggested.

They also said to add the phrase: 'time is of the essence' as this is considered a recognised legal phrase.

I also have forwarded this issue to bbc watchdog and suggest we all do the same.

Britannia have obviously sold them lots of names and addresses to get back some of their losses before having to go into liquidation but intrum do not seem to have details or proof of the debt. DO NOT SEND MONEY!!!

Thanks to all those who have posted replys and given great advice.
