  • I too received a letter today asking for £19.48 which i know i do not owe to Britannia. I contacted them by email and they said i now owed another £7.50 for late payment!!! I have now contacted Trading Standards and Consumer Direct and i am awaiting replys. I have no intention of paying for something i do not owe. They can take me to court if they wish.
  • Hi,
I too have received a letter today stating that I owe 17.48 to Britannia. I have never even bought from them or none that I can recall. Cant even find a website for them on google search. Called Intrum Justitia and they were not very helpful. I asked for proof and they dont have any, telling me that I should contact Britannia direct. This whole story seems a bit fishy to me. Will keep an eye out on this forum to see what comes of it. A bit worried about the late payment fees. This can add up to a lot of money, but I will not pay that I do not owe.
Any information on how to handle this will be much appreciated.
    Good luck everyone!!

  • I had a letter too, and managed to get thru to Intrum Justitia, and got the opertaors name (Gavin Thorpe) he was quite helpful, once I got his details and told him I was recording the conversation! He sensed what I was about to say and said 'you dont owe anything do you?' I've taken several calls today, from people not happy

He took a brief statement from me, I told him I kept all my email reciepts of transactions and rejections of items from Britannia. I think its some 2 years since the last item I purchased and not July this year as his records suggested. He was not able to tell me what the item was, just a reference number, and not a title of a CD or DVD.

He said he had noted my comments, and I may get a call next, but he indicated it might be the end of the matter.

My balance rose from 19.47 to 26.97 because of an admin charge.

I have also dropped a line to BBC Watchdog I suggest others do the same!

  • Exactly the same happened to me today - debt chasing letter in the post for £16.64. Mine appears to be due to Britannia not crediting me for a returned DVD (Intrum had a transaction date, so no argument there). However they had the nerve to try to charge me an extra £7.50 for late payment (letter is dated 1st Nov!) Spoke to a second operator who managed to withdraw the charge (I hope!) but I had no other evidence in my defence (this was from July, so proof of posting long since missing).

Not sure if this will help anybody else who is convinced they don't owe any money to Britannia or these parasites, but here's a link to another template letter to apply for credit agreement info.

Note the correspondence address for Intrum is a PO Box, so not sure if recorded delivery is going to work....
  • Hi all
I've just received a letter from Intrum Justitia saying that I owe £17.48 to Britannia Music & Film. I was a member of a music and film club, that started life as Channel.co.uk an then changed its name to music & film not long after it started, and the amount ir near the amount they used to charge for dvds..

So it could be legit - the music and film website is down, and according to companies house (www.companieshouse.gov.uk) Britannia music is no more.

I wasn't aware that music and film was part of Britannia Music, but it is quite possible is suppose.

Also, according to companies house, Intrum Justitia has a head office in stratford upon avon, as it states in small writing in the letter (Full address, in case it's not on your letter, is Warwick House, Birmingham Road, Stratford-upon-Avon, CV37 0BP) The head guy, according to the Credit Services Association members list (http://www.csa-uk.com/csa/) is Mr S Jones (or at least, he's the guy CSA have as their main contact for Intrum Justitia) and the telephone number for the Stratford-upon-Avon office is 01789 415181

Intrum Justitia appear to be part of a much larger organisation that spans at least 5 countries, so I would imagine a scam would be unlikely, but you never know I guess. I intend to call the Stratford Office and see if i can get any answers that make sense.

As far as I am aware, I haven't had any dealings with them for at least 6 months, probably more and as a final note, Britannia Music dissolved as follows:
Status: Dissolved 21/08/2007 and their accounts have just been due..
    Next Accounts Due: 31/10/2007
Last Return Made Up To: 24/09/2006
    Next Return Due: 22/10/2007

So I can't help thinking that this has been the driving force behind these letters.

Anyhow, good luck everyone - lets keep each other informed of developments.

    Hi,

I got the same letter today and the amount matched up to the last dvd I purchased. I thought I phoned up and payed it as I had details of the person I spoke to time and date but I couldn't see the amount of money coming off my bank statement so I just paid it.

I didn't want to accrue any stupid admin fees.

I am just glad to be shot of the stupid Music & Film co. I was one of those people that stupidly didn't read the small print and purchased 6 expensive dvds just so I kept to my T&Cs and didn't have to pay a stupid £20 admin charge for opting out.

I won't be joining another one of those stupid clubs ever. Expensive lesson learned.

  • nice to know I'm not alone guys. I too had a letter drop on my doormat - dated 1 November. Says I owe £16.48 for something I never received. But how can I proove thiis????

The last time I order (and paid) for something was in december last year.

tried to get hold of this Intrim Justitia today - with no luck and trying to find someone to contact at Britannia is even worse.

Husband says 'just pay it' to get them off my back and avoid teh black mark against an otherwise unblemished rating, but I'm inclined to see 'em in hell first! But don't know what to do.
    Any advice anyone?
  • I have just got home to find one of these letters on my door mat. Apparently I owe £11.49. I haven't had anything of them since last christmas which I paid in full. I have spent the last hour phoning them and it just keeps ringing out.
  • hi
