Self-scan checkouts (esp. ASDA)

These don't seem to like me, and the feeling is becoming mutual.
I cannot recall ever having used one without something not scanning (especially reduced stuff), scanning more than once, getting told to remove an item from the bagging area (which item? and where else should you put it?) or suddenly deciding that it wants the barcode input manually instead.

The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life.

I am too scared to use these-its a machines word against mine if there was an error.0

and don't even get me started on doing fresh fruit....... at the asda near me you can't do more than one at a time - i.e. you have 3 limes, you have to go through the painful process of putting them through 3 separate times.......:happyhear0

When I first started using the ones in Somerfield I thought they were a nightmare, but as I used them more and more I found them to be great! Had the ocassional problem, but overall was a lot quicker than a normal til. I could get through the automated checkout in a couple of mins but now they've removed them and I've had to go back to the traditional ones it takes about 10mins!0

I won't use them at all.
The more we use them, the more they will proliferate.
The more they proliferate the fewer 'human' checkout operators there will be - more people on the dole - no thanks.
I'd rather pay a bit extra and do my bit for job creation.
Also, my wife has used them and says they are such a hassle when things go wrong she'd rather see the checkout person deal with it instead.Gwlad heb iaith, gwlad heb galon0 -

The tesco express i sometimes use on my way to work does not have anyone manning the tills till 9am. I always ask for someone to come and help me with the self-scan. I do not see why I should do someone else's job for them. If I wanted to work in a shop I would!0 -
I prefer using the self checkouts in the supermarkets near me, they are far more friendly and polite than most of the checkout staff.0

use them at the tesco express near work, can be a pain sometimes only time i got annoyed was when i went to scan something reduced it scanned the wrong barcode, was on my lunch, i told someone he took forever coming to help and told me off for trying to sort it out myself!Yes Your Dukeiness0

I can't stand the self-service checkouts, i hate when the pushy staff come along and ask you to go there. I refuse, i'd rather stand in a queue waiting for 'miss happy' to serve me.0

It's a good idea but it's never properly implemented. We had it at our local Safeway (at least it was a Safeway back then) about 15 years ago, so pretty progressive at the time. It worked well at first but then they did so much checking (random rescanning by a checkout person to prevent fraud) that it eventually defeated the point, and as mentioned there were so many errors that the time saved in checking yourself was lost again in sorting out the errors. The system lasted two or three years, perhaps a bit longer but it was scrapped and never reintroduced. Doesn't sound like things have improved."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

The trick is to slap the belt. When you scan an item that doesn't weigh much the tesco ones ask you to place the item on the belt....you have but the machine cant tell. The solution is to pick up a handful of tesco leaflets and slap the belt with them. It then registers that something is on the belt and carries on.
Took weeks of research that lol0
