You do if you want a good rate though.
And if you want to provide your own meter you would be looking at contract of the maximum term allowed. Unless of course you wanted supply and dc for 1000s of sites.
Personally I believe the smart programme should have either not occured (it's been a mess) or have been mandatory (Feel free to buy a generator, it's an option). But that's badly though out government schemes for you. I'm sure there will be more!0 -

I had my smart meter removed when I was with OVO
After it was installed I read my terms and conditions (I know I should have read them first) and they stated that OVO could switch me to a pay as you go tariff if the D/D failed.
I called them on this and they said 'we would never do that' .
I pointed out that I was never told of functionality and requested they remove the smart meter, after a supervisor visit they did and installed an electronic dumb meter.
Took a bit of to and fro but it got donebaldly going on...0 -

I would have gone for this if you had said Netflix was included. :rotfl:
I opened up my meter cupboards today. Landis & Gyr G370 gas and E470 electric meter. I might switch the IHD on, maybe today will be the last time it works

I had it removed on Tuesday by requesting an economy 7 meter from my supplier - EDF.
The solution would appear to be finding a supplier who offers fee-free conversion to E7 metering and has not yet started rolling out E7 Smart meters.
I helped a friend switch to E7 last year, their supplier (SSE) swapped the meter for free (non-smart to non-smart). The only difficulty involved was convincing SSE that the friend could live without 'Smart' functionality, and SSE wouldn't be sued if it turned out the E7 tariff was more expensive for them than a standard tariff (as it turned out I under-estimated the saving, over the course of a year they saved around £75.)
So that's the approach I would suggest to rid yourself of the demonic machine. Use an E7 switch to force them into providing you with a non-'Smart' meter, then consider changing to non-E7 (combined readings) if the E7 costs significantly more. Job done."In the future, everyone will be rich for 15 minutes"0 -
Yes that would work and switching to an Eco 7 tariff would nt increase your bills, it would most likely lower them. but you would have to pretend you were Eco 7. I think it would be classed as non essential meter exchange so there would be a charge
Check the excellent rates with Yorkshire Energy, on their Green Badger Oct 2019 fix. both day and night rates are around the cheapest in the UK .
Current day rate tariff is 12.55 kwh, night rate is 12.10 p/kwh with a dsc at 18p. (South Yorks area )
This tariff is aimed at users who have GCH and Eco 7 meters. Not uncommon in many towns in the UK especially if they are near large power stations. Eco 7 meters are fitted as standard in new builds with GCH.
Liberty Secure 100 smart meters certainly display day/night reads (on button 6 ) for Eco 7 users but I can t say for sure if they operate this function as smart meters0 -

Or else find another supplier (like SSE(?)) willing to do the exchange for free."In the future, everyone will be rich for 15 minutes"0 -
Thanks again
My switch completed today, and the WAN connection is still showing a green light  , Does that mean anything ?
Fist step now will be to ask the new supplier if they can put it in dumb mode.
I started to look around on E7 tariffs and came across this:

Seems to imply that you need a smart meter to get E7, rather than the other way round. I have never had E7,just aware from the old days that it was used for night storage heaters and I think it had an additional meter installed (I realise that particular tariff is probably long gone)0 -

They want to be able to monitor your consumption regularly rather than relying on self-reads (which could be faked) or meter readers (which might be too infrequent).
It is the way round I suggested, most suppliers appear unable to provide a smart E7 meter.937carrera wrote: »I have never had E7,just aware from the old days that it was used for night storage heaters and I think it had an additional meter installed (I realise that particular tariff is probably long gone)"In the future, everyone will be rich for 15 minutes"0 -

If you had a mobile phone, and you cancelled the contract, the handset would still connect to the nearest tower even though you couldn't use it to make or receive calls. That's the situation the meter is in and why the WAN light is lit. The light is on but no one is home.
You can get E7 without a smart meter (its just 1 meter with 2 registers), although no one will advertise their tariff as 'smart meter free' as it would be seen as a failure of their system to support it rather than a feature (even though its what you actually want). But while eachpenny is correct that not all suppliers support E7 on smart meters, there are plenty that do.3.6 kW PV in the Midlands - 9x Sharp 400W black panels - 6x facing SE and 3x facing SW, Solaredge Optimisers and Inverter. 400W Derril Water (one day).
