Have you actually taken delivery of the car and was the contract performed entirely by distance means?

Car sales purchased at a distance are covered by the CCRs (Consumer Contract Regulations 2013) and therefore you have 14 days to cancel and return the car. I would return the car now and also cancel the finance. There's little the dealer can do. You are entitled to your deposit back also but don't expect the dealer to just give that up without a fight.

Did you go to see the car beforehand?

I've taken delivery of the car and driven it circa 100 miles.

Do i just contact the salesperson and tell them i want to give it back? It's about 150 miles drive to the dealer, will i need to drop it off to them?

Just to add, if the dealer haven't informed you of your rights under the Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation & Additional Charges) Regulations 2013, then technically you have up to a maximum of 1 year & 14 days to cancel, they can't make you liable for the costs involved with returning the car (although you may be under a duty to return them, the liability for costs involved will be theirs) and nor can they diminish any refund due to you even if your handling went beyond what is reasonable.

When on the phone it's sometimes hard to think of a fool proof excuse.
I'd say its actually easier. You just say no and hang up and don't answer calls from that number again.

You don't have to think of a fool proof excuse at all, you're a customer thinking of buying a product and changing your mind, you're not someone trying to convince a teacher for the reason you're not handing in your homework.

Thanks for your feedback James. Have you got any experience with this?
not personal no, but i know people who have done it. As some others have said, should be fine, just get it back asap.
  • OP did you just order a standard spec or did you specify options? I ask because personalised purchases are exempt from the legal right to return after inspection for non fault returns.

Selecting items from an options list isn't the same as having something personalised, plus as James2k posted above, the OP purchased a used car.
  • Update:

Dealer has agreed to take the car back. I've agreed to let them keep the deposit on the proviso that they collect the vehicle.

I believe they got legal advice on the matter and still agreed to take the car back.

Thanks for the help everyone. I'm so relieved!!
