Better to exchange US$ in the US or in the UK?

A kind relative recently gifted us $600 while visiting them in the US. We're due to travel back to the Uk tomorrow but was wondering ... are we better off exchanging the dollars for pounds here in the US or do it when we get back to the UK? I know we could always hold onto it for a future trip but we could actually use the money now.
Any tips on where is best to exchange would be most appreciated. Thanks
