I reckon there's a good chance that will have fixed it. Fingers crossed!moneyistooshorttomention wrote: »Yep....still wondering if this area (with its scarcity of lines) meant "my" line/cable/whatever got swopped with someone else's (particularly with knowing who some of my neighbours "think they are" and they just have to mention their name and "wham Service" at other peoples expense iyswim).
No -- the cable goes from your house to the street cabinet. If you had someone else's cable, you'd get their phone calls instead of yours, and unless they're using the same ISP, your router wouldn't be able to connect.
The chances are that the phone line has corroded or one of the connections isn't quite perfect. Swapping the line over should fix that.0 -
Each "line" from the PCP (green cabinet in the street) to a property has 2 pairs of wires in it, the first thing they normally do in these situations is disconnect the current in-use pair and connect the spare pair, both at your property and the PCP. If that works, great, if not they have more work to do to diagnose further. Either that or they found a poor joint and repaired......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

This has just reminded me of what happened to my line a few months ago.
Neighbour didn't have any phone line and wanted to subscribe for a new one with BT. There wasn't a spare cable around and the BT engineer had the brilliant idea of giving them MY line.
It took Openreach almost a month to run a new cable underground and fix the problem.0 -

My partner had a similar issue a while ago.
She was getting loads of disconnections, line noise, etc.
When it worked, she was getting around 5Mbps.
I get a stable 7Mbps (ish) and I next door.
When she complained about noise on the line (and the intermittent internet connection) they swapped her line over which gave it a very circuitous route and the speed dropped to around 2Mbps.
Sky said there was nothing they could do except upgrade to fibre (at an increased cost) and it's been fine ever since.:wall: Flagellation, necrophilia and bestiality - Am I flogging a dead horse? :wall:
Any posts are my opinion and only that. Please read at your own risk.0 -

That's an option I'm bearing in mind if the problem still hasnt been cured - though I know the fibre would only go as far as the green cabinet and it would be that existing line from there on in:(. But, I'm assuming I'd have some improvement (if not full fibre improvement) iyswim. Sorta the equivalent of two runners racing in the same lane - but one of them has had a greater "turn of speed" in the first length so has reached "finishing line" etc before the slower one iyswim.
I've done the querying with the "rottweiler" Internet provider a couple of posters recommended and I couldnt manage to get the same service as I have now (amendment - should have now) - ie unlimited broadband and unlimited phonecalls.
So it's Sky I've got in mind when my "new contract" with Plusnet finishes.
I'm still keeping my fingers crossed that yesterday's "cable swop" they said they did has worked for me and things will work properly for me from here on in (after never having done so for long since moving here).
I've checked with a 3rd party as to why next door neighbour doesnt seem to be having problems and it didnt cast a lot of light helpful to me. I think it's a combination of they tend to use an Ipad for their computer use and rarely want to use the Internet anyway. I'm not anticipating it will be that long before nearby houses are on the market and, at that point, I expect the new owner of one of them will have Internet for the first time and immediately neighbouring house will, hopefully, have someone as used to standard Internet as I am. All of which will mean extra people hopefully putting pressure on PlusNet for standard service levels.0 -

No, this won't really work like that..... as I explained earlier, if the faulty joint/cable is on the E-side, then moving to FTTC will fix it but only by bypassing the faulty part. If the fault is on the D-side, you'll still have as many disconnections as you do now, and in fact may get slightly more due to the higher frequencies in VDSL....
What you really need is the current fault fixed, even if you go fibre at a later date...........Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
