Sticking to the letter of the law you're supposed to have it with you when driving however many people don't and the RTA allows an officer to issue a HORT1 form which gives you 7 days to produce it at a police station of your choosing.

I carry mine with me because I drive trucks for a living so stand a far higher chance of being stopped for a spot check but many if not most people don't and its not an issue.

    What law is that then?

A Police Officer can stop you and ask to see it. If you don't have it on you, he can demand you take it to a Police Station in 7 days. If you don't do that, you are breaking the law.

An Officer can also ask to see your MOT and Insurance Certificates. Few people keep those in their vehicles.

And guess what, it's an offence to produce them on demand.

I've got mine as a photo on my phone along with my passport. Easy life.

I've never needed for driving but it's come in hugely useful for various other transactions over the years. It's the photo card so trivial to carry in wallet.

I think it should be compulsory to be in possession of the card whilst driving, but I don't think that's as critic these days with PNC.

I've always carried mine with me including a copy of my insurance cert, 18/19 years I've carried the 2 and not once been asked to produce them but have needed the licence for click and collect orders at various places.

That doesn’t meet the requirements of the RTA. The occifer needs to see the actual licence, not a photo of it.

With PNC and DVS there's rarely a need to see a physical licence these days.

Mine lives in my wallet, so if I'm out and about, I always have the licence on me.

It's handy ID if I ever need it. If I ever get run over by a bus, then they will know who I am.

And if I ever do get stopped by the police, it's a lot easier to show them the licence, rather than going through the whole rigmarole for them to look me up on their computer.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

i keep mine at home as less risk of loosing it and having to pay to replace it - it's a bit like some countries where you are expected to carry your passport but mine always stays in the hotel safe where less likely to be pick pocketed

Are you sure about that Andy?
