The list of required free retest items is short. They must give you a free retest on those.

Anything else, you're on their goodwill and marketing.

Garages might give reminders to their customers as a courtesy, but they're under no obligation to - nor are the AA or whoever.

You can sign up direct with DVSA to get reminders - free...

Of coarse they are not obliged to send reminders but sending you a reminder on the day it expires is pretty pointless, I could’ve done with that 2 weeks ago.

Depends on what it fails on.

But if you do fail, you'll need to pay for the test twice because they won't be able to give you the free retest.

So take it to kwikfit and fail on brake pads you don't need and get your free retest its win win (for kwikfit or any other place who take drivers for mugs that is).

Considering it’s getting new discs and pads, I’d like to see then try

Quite simply, you're committing exactly the same offences driving away from a garage after a fail as you did on the way to it.

NO. There is no offence driving without an MoT to a pre-arranged MoT test.

Indeed. There's a specific exclusion for driving to and from a pre-booked test...

You'll only need a partial retest if you take the vehicle from the test centre for repairs and take it back within 10 working days. You can be charged a partial retest fee for this. In all other cases, you'll need to get a full retest and pay the full MOT test fee again.
