Go do it!! I'm from S London...it's not so bad!...will make you love home even more when you go back.......My Hubby is dead on his feet as he we decided a month back for him to take on work offered (6 X 12 hr days pr wk) ..........(we run a business together)...my workload has now doubled, we don't get to chat as much but the extra ££££ coming in is really helping our situation...which makes the drudgery more bearable...it's only until nxt July (in our case)...................8 months isn't so long and to clear a debt that would take longer...worth it IMHO!;)
  • Hello,

I just wanted to respond as my husband is doing the same thing, we live in Australia and he was sent to New Zealand for work for 4 months. The extra money he gets while away, around 2000 pounds per month has really helped us really get out debt right down. We have a son so it is difficult for both of us, but it has really put us in a great financial position to start next year. My husband has kept busy in NZ by going to the botanic gardens, museums, galleries, long walks around the city he is in and of course working long hours. It's also been great for his career as he put his hand up to go and also he has learnt a lot from the people he has been working with.

Good luck with whatever you decide,
    Rachel.

Well I'm ignoring the Sarf London slur ;) Actually there are some nice parts south of London. If you want to PM me where you are going to be based I'll point out the nicer areas to visit...can't help much with lochs and heather though ;)
As for the money side that's your Cahoot and Capital debts wiped out! If you still have doubts-run the snowball and see what it will do to your DF date ! Plus the less quantifiable experience of the project that may mean more money/better prospects later too.

Just remember where evey you go you still have us (bit like that sweet ad where the kid says to his Dad " Can't get rid of you!!" ) Eight months is not such a long time, if you keep in touch with family and friends via email/webcam/letter then they won't seem so far away. And for cheap travel deals home, well you already know where to ask for advice on those.
Good luck anyway whatever you decide.
Find out who you are and do that on purpose (thanks to Owain Wyn Jones quoting Dolly Parton)

    Hi Clarab

Do they need anyone else down sarf! I will volunteer my OH! He is a computer geek. Seriously though (I am serious) eight months in your life is nothing. If I thought I could do that I would, however, you are totally right to think about your mental health. What is the point of money if you are so miserable that when you get back to normal life you go off the rails. I agree with the exercise thing though.

Is it perhaps a state of mind thing that you can try to get over. You hate it so you refuse to see even the best bits?

Hi Clara - I can fully understand your reservations having worked both in London AND in Scotland. I know where I would rather be.
It is worth checking the costs to see whether that 'extra' money is really extra or simply sufficient to maintain a half decent living in London.

Thank you all very much. I've taken a deep breath and written to my boss accepting, he'll have the reply first thing in the morning, and i guess I'll start in a fortnight - whirlwind stuff :D

I've justified it to myself that if its too bad, I'll just have to grit my teeth and look to move on a bit sooner - and you never know, it might just be wonderful and staffed by stunningly attractive and amusing men and the time will fly by :D

If my company can't send me home at the end of the project I will look to leave into a more settled lifestyle at home - after all I should be almost debt free, and could I hope work to live again, instead of living to work as I have for the past 2 years of my debt free journey. 2008 - the year I crack it!

Can't thank you all enough. x

As others have said clarab, wherever you go, we'll be here to keep you company and stop you getting lonely.

Time flies you know, 8 months will be gone in no time.

Wow - this was a big decision to make thread and I missed it! D'oh!!!

For what it's worth clarab, I think you've done the right thing.

I know you hated it before but think about is as kind of "forewarned is forearmed" and this time you can seek out fresh air in the South Downs or take a cheap train down to Sussex or somewhere else at the weekend and get big lungfuls of that lovely sea air!

You might make a good few mates as well who will help you find things to do/enjoy as well.

Are you the sort of person who looks for a challenge? If so I was thinking you could look upon this as a challenge to seek out the good...to find at least one person to buddy up with...that sort of stuff.

Good luck and I envy you the opportunity! I look forward to seeing how you get on. Will you start a "Eight Months Down South" thread?? It could be a great journey for us all to share! :D (Am I being selfish now?)

Thanks L_A, I just might edit this one into it :) And I think seeing those figures tumble will give me a real buzz, that should get me through the worst of it!

I hate cahoot. Really really hate them. Im sure you'e all heard this before but flexible loan rate = I took a loan at 6% and they have upped it twice since - actually doubling it at a fortnights notice last time. I wont rest til that's gone!
