Thanks guys - sorry for the gap in responding.

I was assured by the Ford dealer that it would be scrapped. I also have a e-mail from another Ford dealer that I contacted prior to my purchase of the new car (when I was trying to get the best deal) which says -

In order to comply with the terms and conditions of the scrappage programme, the part exchange MUST (his emphasis) be scrapped and we need to provide a DVLA Scrappage Certificate.

A new low has been reached within Ford if this vehicle in fact remains a live vehicle nearly 5 months after so called scrappage.

They haven't defrauded you, they have possibly breached the conditions of the deal with the manufacturer.
  • Maybe not but when someone contracts with me to take my car for scrap, for the Ford scrappage price and then sends a scrappage certificate to DVLA (I signed something to that effect) but does not scrap it what the heck is that?

But they aren't giving you scrap value that you would get from a scrappie are they? It's nothing more than marketing. It's not the same as the government based scrappage from years past.

It is a minimum part exchange value with a different name. These existed before scrappage. They've just used scrappage as marketing for it.

Start seeing it for it is and you won't feel so aggrieved.

we deal with a ford garage that does scrappage and they must have a end of life certificate to prove it has been scrapped for ford to pay them

Which is likely Fords (groups) own T&Cs for their dealerships

Who cares? You were playing two dealers off against each other.
You were fine with wasting ones time?
You got the deal you were happy with.
  • I found all comments helpful and thanks for them. I think though the point has been missed.

My question was never about the price. It was about so called reputable motor dealers telling outright lies. The first wrongly asserted in writing to a potential customer that the car MUST be scrapped and referred to what seems to be a non-existent thing called a DVLA Scrappage Certificate. The second effectively backed up the first by lying to his own customer that the car had to be scrapped.

I do live in the real world full of scams and frauds but why lie to a customer that their trade-in car had to be scrapped? How has that helped Ford's marketing? It hasn't - it's just helped to sully Ford dealers' reputation.

But fraud requires deception in an attempt to gain. What have they gained?
    What have you lost?

If you signed a certificate of destruction then it should be destroyed, but otherwise even selling a car to a scrap yard for scrap value doesn't mean itll be crushed or even broken for parts
Another possibility is that it's still sitting on a transporter or field awaiting scrapping.

I'd say yes. The word 'scrappage' misleads people into thinking they are doing something environmentally beneficial, like taking an old heavily polluting car off the road.

'Scrappage' in the same league as 'up to' broadband speeds and the FCA (or whichever agency deals with trades descriptions like this) should clamp down on it like OFCOM has on broadband sellers.

The environmentally friendly option would be to keep the car going and export it to another country to replace something really at end of life with high emissions. Building a car is usually worse for the environment than a lifetime of running.

Which only matters if Ford will pay them more than they can get for putting it back on the market.
