You can be successful, but just not at spread-betting. You'll get through this!

  • Hi doodledo :)

I swear when I become a millionaire, I'll pay off some of the debt on this forum. ;)
  • I think the fact that you have managed to run up that much debt through spreadbetting should prove to you that no-one wins but the bookies! If you post a full list of your monthly income and outgoings we will be able to advise you on the best way of getting your debt down. This site is really fab at helping people when they need it most and you will be surprised how practical and workable the suggestions made can be! PS - its also highly addictive!!!

Whilst you're doing your SOA a quick thing to give you a start is do a spending diary - you'll be amazed at where you money goes to.
P.S I'm sure you can be a sucess but I'm sure gamblng is designed to make you think you can win but in reality it's only the bookies etc that win. Please get some help with this from a gambling charity. Just think how well you could do if you decided to be a sucess at clearing you debt and saving. I'm sure you'll get a buzz from that.
Oh and sorry - welcome aboard. :hello:

  • It is very hard to convince myself that I'm a loser. I don't want to do it ... I want to believe that I can be successful! I guess this is an addiction that needs to be overcome.

    Hi nowheretorun -

This is going to be a blunt post, but it is not meant to be unfriendly.

You will never, ever, be out of debt until you stop gambling. Post your SOA, cut your expenses, sell your car. None of it matters. The only thing that matters is to stop gambling.

You haven't faced reality yet. In the long run, every gambler loses. You will be no exception. You may win here or there, but this is what the house allows to continue your response of giving them money. If no one ever won, no one would gamble. However, if 5% of gambles pay off, then many people will play, and the occasional winner will see themselves as winners. It's just statistics mate: your behavior is being controlled by the bookies - you are going to lose 95% of the time.

Let's try a thought experiment. What if on the next spreadbet, you won big? Really big. What would happen next? You could dig yourself out of your debt hole. You could pay off friends. And then what? You'd bet again. Why? Because you won big, and you'd think this chance occurence was due to some part of your skill. No such thing I'm afraid. Once you bet again you'd lose. And you'd continue to lose. And then you'd be in the same place.

You are not a loser if you lose at spreadbetting. Conversly, you are not a winner if you win. Your identity as a person has nothing to do with odds that are calculated by a computer to extract the most money from the most people, while deluding them into thinking that they have control over whether they win or lose.

Be a man (in the "human" sense). Control your own life. Walk away from the table now.

    I wish you the best.

Have to agree 100% with solventguy above. Very wise words. The best-case scenario of the next bet is that you win... Would you take those winnings and pay off debt, or would you think to yourself, if I put this on another bet and win again I'll have even more! Of course you'd then lose and be back to square one.... It's not worked so far - how long can you afford to keep trying?!

The golden rule in gambling is don't bet what you can't afford to lose. I'm afraid to say that if you are in any debt at all you can't afford to lose anything until the debt is paid. My advice would be to forget the dream of winning and do something real and tangible to start making a dent in your debt. You'll feel so much more in control. Post an SOA here and you'll get so much advice on how to start chipping away properly at the debt.

    Best of luck to you.

    Thanks Little Pickle :)

At present the situation has deteriorated, bankruptcy may be around the corner. A little frightened about the prospect of a BRO, etc.

How to rebuild one's life after this, is the billion dollar question.
  • Hi Nowheretorun, Theres a bancrupcy thread on here. Hopefully it wont come to that, have you looked into an IVA? Can you get an appointment with CAB or speak to someone at Consumer Credit?

I hope you get something sorted, please dont panic and bet. Think positively and try out your options.

Welcome to MSE hun J x
