Do you pay postage to deposit a cheque at the Postoffice Counter (Santander)?

  • Hi !!!

Thanks we've been through that already on the website. As it doesn't say Postage needs to be paid there but the customer service think other wise. As you can see from my post number 9 I know its only slightly more reliable and as I said I do have both the paying in slips and deposit envelopes at the beginning.

    Thanks

Both Santander staff & Post Office staff have a limited grip on reality. I've been in post offices where they deny they offer this service for Santander customers & I've had Santander tell me they don't offer this service when I phone up for envelopes. But still it works.
Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.
  • Hi EssexExile

I've got to agree with you on that one! I did ring the Post Office and at first, they said they didn't do cheques for any former building society and as Abbey was Santander they wouldn't do it! Then they starting asking about Giro's and I gave up and said I'd ring the bank instead (the PO manger wasn't available either to help further)

So I'm taking no notice of them at all at this point!

But I agree they do have a limited grip on reality at both ends!

Thanks for your reassurance I'll post my success on here as well

Is there any banks easy for you to get too so you can pay cheques in, transfer it to your main account or leave it in the account.
  • Hi DCFC79

I appreciate the advice but if I can resolve the cheque issue and proven to myself it works then I'll be fine to stick with Santander, its only getting through this issue (thats not to say I haven't had issues with Santander before as they customer service does leave a lot to be desired).

I did look at getting a post office bank account but on closer inspection its just a white label Bank of Ireland Current account and there is not extra benefits really to be had from the account. If they could get it to the point that the post office had a bank account with which you could transact like you do in santander I would go for it, but I doubt that the PO will ever get to that point.

(Ie If I could deposit cash without a debit card or pay in a cheque by just giving my account details to the teller)

We've been using those envelopes for years (a business account) with Santander (previously Alliance & Leicester).

We normally crossed out the 'Stamp Needed' part and just write 'Post Office' at the side of it.

The staff will take it off you, issue a receipt and send it off at the end of the day with their 'secure' mail. You don't need to put a stamp on it, as it doesn't go through the regular Royal Mail postal system.

As others have pointed out - you DON'T need a stamp.

Otherwise what on earth would be the point of paying in over the counter at the PO? You could just post it in a post box.

I think you're seeing difficulties where there are none.

    Hi darren72

Thanks for your reassurance and advice on crossing out the 'Stamp Needed' I've done that on all our envelopes now so no one here will be confused by it! And for explaining it goes by a different mailbag as well.

I'll report back my successes when done, incase any other Santander customers ever google anything similar and this thread appears on search.

Lets be honest, you didn't read the whole thread through did you?

As others have pointed out - you DON'T need a stamp.

If you did you would have seen at post number 6 that I was very happy with the answers I had had. The rest of the thread after that has been about customer service from Post Office and Santander with some other members adding extra information. And me giving the conflicting information I'd had from Santander, so people knew where I was coming from.

Otherwise what on earth would be the point of paying in over the counter at the PO? You could just post it in a post box.

In post number 9 I said that I'd be posting them at the post box for years (read the thread before jumping to conclusions!

I think you're seeing difficulties where there are none.

Thats just unhelpful. You might have some badges but could learn something from the helpful advice given from londoninvestor and Mnd, who didn't feel the need to all caps anything or be condescending.

You'll note I didn't feel the need to All Caps anything - I'm only talking about a cheque and the Post Office.
  • At my bank I use the mobile app, and the money is there at the end of the following banking day!
