Named house, or number?

Just to double check - you're sure that it's the same property listed twice in the Postcode Address File (i.e. Royal Mail's database)? That would be unusual.
I've come across roads where some houses have numbers and others have names....
(And somebody who moved in and got confused thinking that because their house was the first in the road, it would be '1 Road Name' - but it wasn't, it was known by its name.)0 -

Yup - listed as house name, number, road, city, postcode, and number road, city, postcode.
For instance, if I do a postcode search on plus.net I'll see (the addresses changed for anonymity)
Hill View, 99, Windermere Road, Sheffield, SA1 9OW
99 Windermere Road, Sheffield, SA1 9OW
I've had a few people I've had to ring to sort out things get confused and are like "which one is it?" which is why I asked this question reallyDespite my name, I'm not a student any more0 -

Could have come about because of an individual's personal decision at local Post Office?
I accidentally found out that the local Post Office here is still calling my house "the name it was when I bought it" between themselves - rather than "its actual name (ie the one I changed it to and it's therefore the real name of my house)".0 -

In that case, it doesn't matter which one you use - essentially the addresses are identical, and the name is optional.
From your original post, I assumed you meant the two listings were:
Hill View, Windermere Road, Sheffield, SA1 9OW
99 Windermere Road, Sheffield, SA1 9OW
If you want, you can find out the 'official' Royal Mail postal address here:

The official page you linked to has both, and something interesting.
So the name is something like:
Hill View House - and that's how I've seen it stylised everywhere, on automated lookup postcode things on websites like plusnet.
Royal mails site has the number version and the name version but as Hillview House. How hard is it to standardise on one address?! :rotfl:Despite my name, I'm not a student any more0 -
There are certain streets in the UK and even villages where only Names exist and these have to be used as the Post Office have not assigned numbers.
However, if the post office have assigned numbers to a street, then these need to be used in your address as this is what gets post and parcels to your house and more importantly, the emergency services.
You can use the name in addition, but the number is paramount.Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.0 -

1. Is it possible to get the Post Office to "assign numbers" to the houses in a road that doesn't have them?
2. If the Post Office does so - then what is the process of ensuring these numbers are actually used (ie put up on the houses concerned)?0 -

Both versions are still 'out there' on some postcode finders.
I don't think anyone could force people to display numbers, even if they were assigned at this stage.Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
Not many houses within three miles of me have numbers. No streets either.
Same here; we have neither a number or street name, the official address is simply:
House Name
Village
Postal Town
Postcode
Rarely a problem apart from a few poorly designed shopping web sites that cannot handle an address without a street name...Every generation blames the one before...

We added a number to our house name because we're the corner house, but didn't have a number. I think we had to go to the local council to get a number assigned, and then back to Royal Mail.

Knowing the local councils in this area - I have my doubts they'd do this (even though it's logical). They'd do everything they could not to do so.
I had to make sure I knew what was what when I changed my house name and then "told" (not "asked") them that I had already checked it against Council criteria across whole of UK and it had already been changed by me/fait accompli/new nameplate already in position. I knew already of their (local) policies on this - so no need to send me details of that - as I'd already made my own decision regardless.0
