Named house, or number?

Our house used to have a name. It's on the original deeds. At the time it was built (1930s) it was the last house in the road, after a group of identical houses. I don't know why it wasn't given the next number in sequence. Then 3 houses past ours were built in the 1960s and numbered as though ours had the correct number between.
The previous owners kept the name, but we've abandoned it in favour of the number.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. Our village doesn't have house numbers, just names.
Several neighbours have died waiting for ambulances to find them.
There's a lot to be said for numbers.0 -
The number matters most. A few years ago the PO was informed by our council that we and another house in the same postcode/small location had the same number. It had taken them 24 years to realise, as the postman had no problem with it.
It didn't matter that they were 'Wurzel Cottage' and we were 'Dunbovverin', the situation with two identical numbers couldn't be allowed to stand.
Our postcode contains 4 x no. 1, 4 x no. 2, 4 x no. 3, 4 x no. 4, 4 x no. 5 and 4 x no. 6. (4 blocks of flats with individual names.)
Royal Mail and the council don't ever seem to have had a problem with it (20 years) but people who use certain computer number and postcode address finders often don't look beyond the first block (alphabetically) so we in the first block get a a lot of stuff meant for the others.
It also causes occasional problems when organisations tell us someone is already registered at our address.

As it has a number, use that. If you want to use the name as well, you are free to do so.All posts are my personal opinion, not formal advice Always get proper, professional advice (particularly about anything legal!)0

Use the number first and foremost. You can also use the name (as a secondary thing) if you wish to.
I used to quite like the idea of houses having names - until I got one (ie current house).
Every single house in the road has a name and none of them have a number. I can imagine just how confusing that would be to find a house even in England/nearer the borders here/etc. In this area - it's even more confusing, with many of the names being in Welsh.
I have to explain every single time where my house is located to anyone trying to find it and I'd much rather that the road was numbered only and people could just walk along it going "No 2, No 4, No 6 and so her house (which is No. 10) must be around about here". I just hope no-one removes the identifying landmarks I use to describe where it is - "Go past that landmark, look out for this landmark, etc - and then you'll find my house". Goodness only knows how a stranger (eg an ambulance if it ever came to it) would find my house, if I werent able to provide those instructions.
It's confusing for some of us in the road even finding another house in the road - as the only housenames I can ever remember are the English ones.0 -

So, we were given a new address which no longer mentions the hamlet name. Our number vanished too.
But guess who couldn't get the hang of this? Yes, the council. Only this morning I let out a cheer, because the Electoral Roll thingy that arrived from them had the new address on it. Well, only 5 years have elapsed!
When we moved to Devon we lived in a small village where most of the houses had names, not numbers. Our flat had the delightful name of "Flat above the pharmacy". The council refused to acknowledge its existence and refused to give us a bin or a council tax bill. The utilities were included in the rent so that wasn't a problem.
Every time someone asked for our address to put on their computer the computer wouldn't accept it. We had a hilarious few years:rotfl:
Ps in case anyone is concerned we did sort out the council tax issue but not until after we left.0 -

We're going to be "The Old Scrapyard". With a door number for Amazon. Yodel will never find us.
We used to go past a cottage called 'Esso View'. Presumably it's changed hands and the new owner doesn't have the same sense of humour as it's no longer called that. No prizes for guessing what it was opposite.Make £2025 in 2025

We don't have numbers in our road so just names.0

Hi all,
Thanks for the feedback - so probably should go for
House Name
House Number Street Name
City
Postcode
Thanks!Despite my name, I'm not a student any more0 -
And make sure the name and number are easily visible from the road - pretend you're in an ambulance looking for your house on a dark rainy night and see if you're findable.0
