Upgrading to SSD

Options
In 2011 I purchased a laptop with a spec to last, which it has, and has served me well the i7 version of this https://www.asus.com/Laptops/N55SF/specifications/

With the prices of 500gb SSDs and sdcards coming down significantly, i was considering upgrading as loading is slow. I have cleaned up several times, with no real improvement. The original disk was 750gb, so feel that with a 500 SSD and a 128gb memory card for data I can keep with me would be OK, it is backed up to a network drive, and USB drive too. Yes belt and braces, but during retirement I have been digitising all my music, and working on photos, etc., and do not want to start again!

PROBLEM: I have updated to Windows10, so have no disks, I have a downloaded copy of Office10, so again I have no disks.

I know I can clean up my hard drive to the max and do a Macrium copy, but feel I may take over some of the load up invisibles which slow it down.

Any other suggestions? Thanks DG

I would do a clean install of 10 on the new drive though, w10 should automatically validate

What is Office10? Please take the time to find out the exact edition and post back.

No need for any key with Windows 10, it will activate automatically because it has already been used on this machine.

Definitely do a clean install as recommended above. If you are already running Windows 10 then the licence will be activated automatically.

I replaced the hard drive on my old laptop, which had been upgraded from Windows 7 to 10, with an ssd and the improvement was significant and well worth doing.

As far as Office goes, I have used the free Libre Office suite for years. This works fine with existing ms docs unless you have some very fancy macros in your spreadsheets. You can always try it out and remove it later on if you don't like it

You can download an ISO file to create your own installation disc for both of those directly from Microsoft. You don't need to enter a key when installing Windows 10 as it already has stored a digital license on their server so as long as it is activated before reinstalling and you don't make too many hardware changes at the same time it'll reactivate using the digital license.

  • Crucial mx500 is good value for 500GB , Samsung are most recommended, but more expensive

As above, Crucial MX500 or Samsung 860 EVO tend to come out on tops regarding performance and reliability.

Pick whichever is cheapest on the day.

(possibly cheaper, being MSE) alternative; 128 SSD and move 750gb disk to DVD tray (using a caddy); of-course depends on your DVD usage but if that's occasional, a cheap external DVD drive is an option.
