MMMM Don't dislike the thought of that GC but the small easy removal of critical(private) data on a SD card is appealling to me, as while at home no DVD no problems as have the desktop, but while travelling is useful now and again without carrying something else. Another factor is I have split the 750gb to 255gb for c: and struggling with it. I will clear up the laptop and try to SD card for a while, could be that the SSD might be in the Black Friday deals! Yes I know it is only September
    Thank again DG

Why is it I have less time now I am retired then when I worked?
  • Crucial offer an excellent service and a long warranty. Furthermore, if you download and use their compatibility tool, they guarantee the SSD (and RAM if needed) is compatible with your laptop.

I would tend towards a belt and braces approach... if you buy a drive caddy you can do a real quick "warts and all" copy of your old hard drive to the SSD. Crucial supply a copy of Acronis to do that, and have an on-line instructional video too.

Once copied you can make a backup of the SSD, then do a fresh install of Win 10. That way, if you struggle to install drivers, etc. You can easily revert to a working copy.

It would be interesting to hear how much difference there is between a fresh Win 10 install and the original one c/w clutter.

Depending on the make of your laptop, it may have a vacant mSATA slot that would enable you to add an SSD without losing or repositioning the original hard drive.

That is what I am doing with my Dell.

Because those who really know what they are doing don't jump in both feet first with a fresh Win 10 install on (a) a 7 year old pre Win 10 laptop, and (b) assume Asus drivers for Win 10 are available for ancient hardware.

Tread carefully with a back out plan, or spend days trying to get it sorted.

But this ancient hardware already runs W10 so the drivers are already on the disk so copy those and they are good to go...

^This exactly. No need to go faffing about cloning to the SSD, then making a backup before then doing a fresh install.
