Upgrading to SSD

The big problem is that if the OP installs a fresh Win 10 (build 1803 or whatever) and their current version is updated to build 1709, for example. There may be driver issues... which is why the Microsoft updates don't automatically update every PC/laptop to the latest build.
Asus, and Acer, to name just two, do not issue Win 10 drivers for their older hardware that came with Windows 7. I have had issues with battery monitor and backlight control... still installing an SSD and the latest Win 10 fixes all known problems, except Microsoft, Asus and Acer don't quite see it that way. Which is why I suggested a careful approach with a back out plan.0 -
They still will have the original system disk ..... and it works now ...what is the problem? Cloning the existing disk brings with it all the problems it exhibits now (plus the added carp they may have installed) . So then if they have problems with "battery monitor and backlight control." they must be living with it now. The back-out plan is re-install the old disk then report with what doesn't work. It is as ABC , perhaps I am not as simple as abc :cool:Frozen_up_north wrote: »The big problem is that if the OP installs a fresh Win 10 (build 1803 or whatever) and their current version is updated to build 1709, for example. I have no known issues with Win 10 on the machine. To ensure there are conflicts I will ensure the latest updates are installed before undertaking thus. Thanks to all. DGMember #8 of the SKI-ers Club

Tread carefully with a back out plan, or spend days trying to get it sorted.
??
Sorry, but that is literally the most crazy thing I've read here in a while.
You want them to copy the HDD to the SSD and then make a copy of the SSD, which is a copy of the HDD and then install Windows 10 to the SSD????
That's nuts!
Just back up the Drivers if you want 'belt and braces'.
Then just clean install Windows 10 to the SSD and tackle any Drivers issues that may come up.
2011 is not ancient.
That's ridiculous. Why not just stop digging? 0 -
