So you didn't sign an agreement? Not even when you signed the Direct Debit mandate? Or when an engineer came around to sort the broadband/telephone/tv service you applied to have?

  • As I understabnd it:
    • In effect VM gave the OP an interest free loan or 'buy now, pay later' deal by not asking for the first four months' subscription until the end of that period.
    • He's doing his best not to pay VM at all
    • He still expects them to supply his household (albeit in his wife's name).
I'm not surprised they're reluctant. It's almost as bad as those who clone MAC addresses to get Internet access for free.
  • no there was never anything signed the engineer never asked i never signed a direct debit and nor did i sign there contract when i took the service out they said it would be billed the 28 th of each month starting from the next month so there is no loan or anything that has been given to me and i had called them aswell asking about the direct debit and they said it can be a few days late this was after them not taking for 2 months and said that it was also showing on there system as paid but this is going off topic here i asked for advice for the current prob in my wifes name and if they can do this by law as the debt is not and has never been in her name

Ok, if you wish to dodge your responsibilites as a reasonable adult, that's your issue, fine. However, VM is perfectly entitled to chose who it wisesh to provide services to or, in your case, not.

Don't you think it's reasonable from VM's point of view that having someone apply with the same surname as you, at a home that used its services before without paying, is a tad suspect?

Have to agree with Jada on this one,

Why not just pay the bill? I cannot believe that you have the audacity to expect them to supply the services to you (albeit in your wife's name) when you owe them money!

MSE is about saving money, not dodging money you owe by hiding behind some legislation.

With regard to your wife saying that you no longer live there, this is a line that they will have heard countless times before. They are likely to ask for proof that you no longer live there.

Your posts come across as very smug. However, I would not be feeling so smug when I realise that I can no longer receive a service that I wish to have?
    Gone ... or have I?

To answer the question in the topic title....yes, they have the legal right to refuse you, or anyone, service. Simple as that.

IIRC Virgin media sent me an agreement/contract along with a reply paid envelope to return the signed document.
Included was the account card with user name and password.
Also a page concerning a consumer hire agreement, with a tear off slip for cancelling within 7 days.
I find it hard to believe they installed VM without receiving a signed agreement.
    Move along, nothing to see.
