Barclaycard on Google Pay

Hi, I have a Barclaycard cashback VISA card and have been using it for many years alongside my Amex Platinum and a couple of bank debit cards. Over the last year I've found myself using Google Pay on my Android phone more than cash, to the extent that I've actually stopped carrying my cards with me.

However, I'm still unable to setup my Barclaycard to work with Google Pay. According to articles I've read, this is because Barclaycard don't allow it and insist that contactless payments using Barclaycard will only work through their mobile app. Unfortunately, configuring this insists on making my Barclaycard the default contactless card and I don't want to do this as I prefer my current account debit card to be the default.

I just want to double check that Barclaycard can't be used with Google Pay and I'm not missing something. I have already sent a secure message and had a conversation with Barclaycard customer service but they didn't have a clue what I was talking about!!!! Maybe they don't have Google Pay or the concept of contactless payments in India :)

If Barclaycard isn't compatible with Google Pay how do we make Barclaycard sit up and listen to its customers and give customers the choice; use Google Pay or use their own App.

Thanks Gary. I've actually been googling this very question and it seems as though s75 may not apply when using google pay due to the fact the link between the customer and supplier is broken. I may have misinterpreted the information though...

It's not broken since it's not a third-party payment processor

I agree that using Google Pay shouldn't have any impact on the s75 status of a payment.

However, it would appear that s75 is hit and miss anyway these days as the consumer has no way of knowing if a third party payment processor is involved. Just another excuse for the credit card companies to get out of paying compensation.

Barclaycard staff in India have no idea what Barclaycard bPay is. Sigh.
I came into this world with nothing and I've got most of it left.

    According to the supplied link:

    "Contactless Mobile

And for Android users2, you can set up your Contactless Mobile using the Barclaycard app or Barclays Mobile Banking app. When that’s done, you can pay the fast, easy and secure way wherever you see the contactless symbol."

So, I started the process of setting up my Barclaycard, but it appears to want to set it to the default Tap & Pay payment application. This means Google Pay will no longer be my default, which I guess means my current default card (my bank debit card) will also, no longer be my default card.

So, there are two restrictions for using Barclaycard contactless through your mobile:
    1. You can't use it with Google Pay.
    2. It has to be your default contactless card, which means you won't have a default setup through Google Pay!

Looks like I'll be looking for another Visa Credit card :(

Have you tried allowing the Barclaycard app to install itself as the default contactless payment app, then going into the "Tap & pay" settings on your phone and making Google Pay the default again?

probably something you don't want to do, but if you made Barclays your current account (ie switch to them) then the app supports contactless debit card as well - you can switch easily between making the debit card or your Barclaycard the default contactless card.

It does also mean that then you are giving Barclays your spending habits data rather than Google - but that may not worry you anyway.
