I would browse round Antique Fairs and that way you get a much better ring for your money

Have a look on here http://www.geraldonline.com
I wanted a single round cut diamond, and had picked out a quarter carat stone in a high street jewellers. For £50 less here, I got a half carat diamond and it came with a certificate to prove it's a decent stone. My OH was chuffed to bits with the saving and I got a bigger and better diamond
Here I go again on my own....0 -
Engagement rings, the guide is two months salary (i was nearly killed last i put that on this site)
Its not about what it costs but what, but remember its something she is going to have for the rest of her life!
But for great value, go to your local goldsmith. He can provide a gem and the ring made to your spec taylored to your budget. Look in your yellow pages or ask in your local h samuel who their goldsmith is!
I nealy dided when mr mcchicken to be brought out a stonking huge rock well over 3 times his salary, but he gave up buying rubbish (which all boys do) and saved up and he accrued the money quite quick!
Happy shoppingThat mrs macchicken to you!0 -
I still don't know where that's come from! My DH wasn't working when we got engaged, so I'd have had 2 x £0 if we'd followed that guide!macchicken wrote:Engagement rings, the guide is two months salary (i was nearly killed last i put that on this site)
By all means be extravagant - as my DH was, £50-£60 was a heck of a lot of money to him in those days, still is as it happens - but within your means, and if you haven't got two months salary spare, already saved and not otherwise spoken for, why do you have to find it now? And if you have got 2 months salary spare, what are you doing here?
Send some of it my way!
Start as you mean to go on and don't feel you HAVE to spend that much on the engagement ring, any more than you HAVE to have 2 page boys, 6 flower girls, 3 bridesmaids, a matron of honour and a dress that makes you look like a meringue the day you get married! You don't even have to have a Best Man.Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
OP where are you based? Get down to your local jewellery quarter, the one in Birmingham is very good and much cheaper than high street, would avoid high street, I also know a very good jewellers in Manchester too that is cheap as well.2p off is still 2p off!0

I didn't have an engagement ring, I had a diamond set platinum wedding ring instead, perfect in my eyes & cost a lot less than a regular engagement ring. Find out what your GF wants, it might not be what you expect.Post Natal Depression is the worst part of giving birth:p
In England we have Mothering Sunday & Father Christmas, Mothers day & Santa Clause are American merchandising tricks:mad: Demonstrate pride in your heirtage by getting it right please people!0 -
I would agree with letting your gf choose. We had a lovely afternoon doing this. Set a limit and take her out and pamper her, have a nice lunch etc. If you want to be romantic, book lunch then ask her to go ring shopping that afternoon as a surprise.
I love my ring, and have nice memories of the choosing bit.
ETA: remember, ladies normally like shopping, and she has to wear it the rest of her life. She might have been dreaming for years about the sort of ring she would like.0 -
I wanted a very plain band solitaire diamond. It took us two days to find and then by oh took me for a lovely lunch, had roses delivered, and we had a wonderful time. The best memories, and the ring ended up costing less than £300.00, yet it's exactly what I wanted.
Have yu thought about what the money could go towards, not just sitting on you oh finger?0 -
DONT ask without a ring, its so sad when that happens! girls tend to love things even more if their man has really tried hard to get it right for them.
As for the two months salary thing, i might have guessed id be the evil lady for that one. Check any jewellers guide they will reccomend a similar ammount. Like i said before thats only a guide and it is more important to get the right ring!
I think for something as important as an engagement ring its value and not cost that needs to be addressed!
There are places where one should be more important than the other! That mrs macchicken to you!0 -
An engagement is about love and nothing more. Don't get hung up on cost, just make sure you stay in love.I ave a dodgy H, so sometimes I will sound dead common, on occasion dead stupid and rarely, pig ignorant. Sometimes I may be these things, but I will always blame it on my dodgy H.
Sorry, I'm a bit of a grumble weed today, no offence intended ... well it might be, but I'll be sorry.0
