Like I said, we didn't know it was a nest until the landlord told us and only saw the extent today - obviously we wouldn't raise vague complaints of there being too many wasps in the area to our landlord, but now we know what's causing it.
    Makes no sense.
Wasps live in nests. If there are 'too many wasps in the area' then it's because there is a nest nearby! Not hard to follow their flight path and locate it....

However, best of luck this evening and let us know how the farmer/LL responds.

If the problem has been as bad as you say, I find it difficult to understand why you didn't spot such a large nest sooner? Anytime I have had wasps nesting, it has been very obvious where they are coming and going.

You need to ask the landlord very nicely. Some folks do not have an issue with wasps, so might be better not to go in all guns blazing!

Because it's under their eaves and I have to stand inside the LL's fenced-off area to see it, but we have noticed the wasps hanging around the roof all summer. I'm really confused why I'm having to defend my actions, I'm not an exterminator or an expert on all things wasp, I've done a bit of research since finding out and that's it. Regardless of my previous failings to properly identify the nest, we now 100% know that a nest is there and that is where we are.

I will be having a conversation with LL this evening, so fingers crossed.

This summer has been pure hell, we haven't been able to set foot outside our door without being attacked by multiple large wasps, these guys are aggressive as they come and WILL attack on sight.

We have not been able to have our windows open, even leaving them open a crack results in 5-10 wasps in our house per day.

This has been compounded by the fact that we have adopted a puppy, meaning every time he needs the toilet we have to guard him with an electric swatter and constantly duck and flail around.

It's just surprising that the wasps are as aggressive as you say and that you've put up with it for so long.

Jesus christ, this forum is like standing outside in my garden. Yes I am a moron for only just finding out about the nest, and in future I will make sure that I am proactive in seeking out and destroying wasps nests.

As far as we were concerned there was nothing else to be done but tolerate it, but now we know different.

What I find surprising is that someone asks a non-loaded question in an appropriate forum and half the people take it as an opportunity to be critical over....well I'm not even sure what.

I'm not including your comment in that, I would be surprised too if someone tolerated this amount of inconvenience for 10 weeks.

Hmm. I would be careful about over-reacting like that when you talk to the Landlord......Farmers, like wasps, can be quite tricky customers to deal with.

Would you not be mildly aggravated if you asked a straight-forward question concerning a situation that's stressing you out, with no ill-intent behind it, and within 30 minutes the bulk of the responses are from people criticizing you for not identifying the situation sooner or putting words in your mouth such as 'dog-murdering killer wasps'? Is this an advice forum or the comments section on Youtube?

These replies have all been in quick succession, from my perspective I've posted a thread, and then spent the last 30 minutes constantly justifying or defending my situation. I haven't even been critical of my LL, I've been saying how nice he is!

To answer your original questions, I don't believe they have any responsibility to pay for the removal
( especially since it's on their land, not really yours) However, if you offer to pay then hopefully they'll be amenable.

With regard to not being able to open your windows, you can buy a automatic "insect killing spray" (can't remember proper name) that emits a spray every few minutes and kills wasps really quickly. We had a similar experience and stopped seeing live wasps in the house, just dead ones. Not ideal, but best in the circumsntaces.
  • I'm not sure why everyone seems to be doubting you on this or thinking you're over exaggerating. i'm tolerant of wasps but having hundreds hanging around every time you leave the house is my idea of hell! i'm amazed you've managed to put up with it so long.

at least now you've found the cause hopefully the farmer will have no issue with you getting rid of them so you can enjoy the last few weeks of summer in peace :)

Just as a side thought, you could try fly screens inside the windows / doors so you can at least have them open without the wasps invading.
