(by the way, it is channels 1, 6 or 11 that should be used, not 5, 6 and 11).

It doesn't matter which numbered channel you use -- you just want to choose one that isn't in use. The bandwidth of each channel overlaps with neighbouring ones, so ideally you'd want as much of a gap as possible between your network and others.

or can you recommend the right router please?

I'd wait for other opinions, but if the Post Office are paying, I'd maybe go for something like this:

    DrayTek Vigor 2862ac:

yes it should be, all you should need is your PO broadband username & password to enter into the bt router interface so it will authenticate to the PO servers...that means you should also be able to leave the wifi details as-is ;)
    ......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D

would you be able to take me through that in layman's terms please?

I wonder why the Post Office have not suggested this :(

Most (if not all) ADSL routers need to be told how to connect to the ISP's servers. Ask the PO for your "ISP logon details", i.e. the username & password the router needs to talk to their servers. Then, there should be a place to enter these details in the BT router, which should allow it to "see" the broadband signal on your phone line and talk to the PO servers (where your BB comes to you via).

Not overly familiar with the BT hubs so can't tell you where to look in the interface (quite well hidden, IIRC), but someone on here may well do. On Consumer non-ISP provided routers it's usually pretty obvious, for example on a D-Link 2640B it's on the first page you see when you log in to the router..

As to why the PO did not suggest this, most ISPs these days want to try and restrict you to using their supplied router, partly so their 1st line tech support can have their scripts written around only one router model so they can have less-techie people provide (limited) support..funny enough because it's cheaper to do it like that..

Nope, you should ALWAYS use channels 1, 6 and 11 as these are the only 3 channels in the 2.4Ghz band that DO NOT overlap with each other. Any other channel will only give you space for 2 non-overlapping channels.
Some wireless access point vendors automatically choose one of these 3 channels when set in auto-mode (for example Ubiquiti).

Draytek routers are a very good choice in my opinion (I have a 2860 myself), however you still need someone to help you out with the configuration, it's not a plug&play router as the BT one.
