hi, i used a next gift voucher 2yrs out of date! yes 2yrs. the lady at the till wouldnt accept it so i spoke to manager and she let me use it. so always worth a try.

I wonder if this is worth a try, though given various other comments about t r us service, your chances are slim to none.A call to head office wouldnt cost much.Havent toys r us now introduced gift cards instead of gift vouchers, maybe being a reason they could have been phasing them out?

I can think of no legitimate reason why any voucher should have a use by date.

What if the companies taken over/goes bust?

Sorry, Don't see your point. If that were to happen all assets/liabilities are normally transferred as well, unless they just buy the name in which case the vouchers would be invalid anyway - so no need for use by date.

The fact is though is vouchers aren't money. Every voucher I can think of have had an expirey date and this has been the case all along. A reason could be updating them to make them more hard to copy etc so give them a date to be used by.

Having said that everyone accepts that with money when old notes are no longer accepted. It's easy though as everyone gets to know about currency updating. If a company tried that there would always be someone who for some reason wouldn't know an old version is no longer valid and the company would have no way of knowing who owns vouchers to inform them of any change. So perhaps an expiry date is a much better method.

I still don't see the point in complaining about something when all people have to do is read things.

We received cinema vouchers with an expiry date and ended up watching an average film to save them going to waste as there wasn't any decent films around.

Umm, in fact paper notes are just vouchers in real terms. They are Vouchers/receipts for coinage, they have "I promise to pay the bearer on demand the sum of xxx" would you like to see your £5 note have a use by date on it? When the bank of England withdraws older design notes we have a couple of years notice for one thing, and for another you can still deposit the notes with the BoE even after the date of their being withdrawn, they just cease to be legal tender in shops etc.- they are not worthless as with TrUs vouchers.

Thanks to everyone for your comments, and the enlightening discussion that followed!

Hollydays, great idea, I'll try head office on Monday and see if I get any joy.

In my opinion vouchers are exactly the same as hard cash, the only difference is that the giver has tied you into spending that cash in one place, for which the store should be grateful and a little bit accommodating if they want return business!

    Anyway, thanks again.

Hi. I work at Toys R Us on the customer service desk (don't hate me please lol) so I might be able to help a little bit.

Gift vouchers aren't given when you get a refund, you get a credit note. TRU only sell gift cards now. Gift vouchers are valid two years from the date printed on the back & credit notes are valid for a year.

If the vouchers are out of date, then head office is your best bet!

Oh & we're not all bad! I do get a lot of grief but unfortunately I have to stick to the policy, whether I agree with it or not!
