Toys R Us Gift Vouchers

Hi I'm a newbie, and I haven't worked my way around the site yet, so apologies if this is in 6ft neon letters elsewhere.

We found £25 worth of Toys R Us vouchers in my sons piggy bank, which we tried to spend, but were told they were out of date :o (they were date-stamped on the back which we hadn't noticed).

Is this legal? Has anyone else had any joy getting their money's worth? Surely vouchers can't be out of date?

Thanks for your help!

Yes they can be. Were they a present or did you buy them yourselves

They were a present. Does that make a difference?

No,i just wondered could they have been date stamped because they were given instead of a refund.Just a thought.

Oh I see. No they're split - from different people with different dates on! Sorry, this is probably in the wrong place, but it just makes me so cross that people have spent their money there in good faith, and we've essentially lost it!

    Thanks again for your help.

hollydays is correct (as always!), and unfortunately this is just another example of Toys R Us very poor customer service.

    How exactly

Most vouchers have an expiry date

Unless the expiry date is ridicolously low then its completely fair that they reject them after expiry

How long did you get to spend them exactly?

Id receieved a voucher from virgin megastores for xmas once, i hadnt thought of checking the back for a date as other vouchers ive had they havent had a date but when i looked at the voucher 4 months later i noticed there was a use by date so i wrote a letter to virgin saying id received the voucher as an xmas gift and i hadnt spent it yet due to not going to virgin much(the nearest virgin is in the next town), they replied saying they apologised for the inconvenience, the expiry date was intended as a trial and they basically said to take the letter in when i use the voucher, dont know if you could do the same idea

Why should they have an expiry date? Does your bank note or coins have an expiry date? Do we have deflation in this country so making the voucher worth more? No, we have inflation so whenever the voucher is spent it is likely to be worth less then when it was purchased. Just a con by large companies to get more money from consumers without providing any goods in return - I can think of no legitimate reason why any voucher should have a use by date.

I agree with you, if you get given vouchers as a christmas present, birthday present or as a gift you dont want to feel as though you have to spend the vouchers on something you dont really want as the date is coming up
