Galaxy Note 4 dead after 3 years

Bought from Mobiles.co.uk. Carphone Warehouse said yesterday it's probably a common motherboard fault.

What are the reasonable resolution expectations with either Samsung or Mobiles given that it's out of warranty?

Carphone offered £210 off a Note 9 upgrade but I'm unlikely to want to pay £1100 for a phone that will die in 3 years time :(

Cheers!

Buy another phone and don't spend so much if you can't write it off after two years.

Well you may want to get out of mobile network carriers, (including CPW ) Eco (Jail) system now.

Well, this is their business model, they attempt to tie you up with a contract phone. Your problem is their business opportunity, you will always have to come back to them.

    I would suggest
    1) Go to an decent independent repair shop to repair it.
    2) Get an network free (second hand) phone.

Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is 2014 decent flagship phone. and I don't think you have any problem to use at 2018 in terms of performance.

I just picked out Oneplus 3T (second Hand), Xiaomi Redimi Note 5 Pro (brand new) here for just a reference. They are below 200 pound.

I think that probably you would be OK with OnePlus3 /3T, which will get the official Android Pie (Android 9) soon. Once you would be free from the network carrier business. You would find more options. Please do your own research.

    Thanks Toshi,

Yes, have been looking at that route too, since I am only on a rolling monthly SIM contract with O2 now - the Xiaomi caught my eye straight away and will look at OnePlus.

Would you suggest an independent repairer rather than Samsung? The figure I've had mentioned for the latter is about £200 for the motherboard fix even if they have one in stock.

You can get a Refurbished Galaxy Note 4 inc 12 month warranty at £100-150, then Samsung estimate £200 is ridiculously expensive.

If you like DIY stuff (opening up your mobile phone etc), you may want to get another Galaxy Note 4 and current faulty one can be repair later (and/or) used as a spare parts.

However, things you shouldn't forget is that Software obsolescence. Your Galaxy Note 4 is upgradable to Android 6 at most. Android smartphone will not get software upgrade more than 2 years or so. So we are forced to give up the smartphone every a couple of years eventually, even the hardware performance is fully capable of running the latest application.

There is a solution! Interested? Read the below please.

You may consider to keep the above option to install the latest Android OS after the official OEM software support ends. I know a lot of people don't bother, the consumers are told only sightly improved hardware every year without understanding software development.

Just keep this option. then get Xiaomi, OnePlus etc. (no Nokia, Huawei)

Hareware-wise, your Galaxy Note 4 uses Super AMOLED display, budget Xiaomi ranges do not use AMOLED display. Please do your own research.

Thanks toshi, I think it was an attempted software install that killed the Note 4. Same thing killed my original Note after 5 years. I meant to switch off automatic updates at some point :(

Also...apart from the screen, the Xiaomi does not have as good a camera or image stabilisation. These were quite important to me on the Note 4...

    Any other choices?

    Thanks

I am so interested in Xiaomi Poco F1 now. Xiaomi Poco F1 may not be as good as Samsung Galaxy Note 9, but you can save £500 ?

Well I personally won't buy any brand new phone, but if I would, I will wait for a couple of month to fix initial bugs.

Alternatively, Oneplus 3/3T/5/5T? second hand phone It depends upon your budget. (Or Samsung Galaxy second hand ? as you are familiar ... )

No rush, so your research please!

(Really really techie stuff ) You can actually improve the photo quality massively with Google Camera with HDR+ Ported with Oneplus 3/5 etc.

Do you know if it is possible to import from a Samsung backup to a non-Samsung phone - Texts mostly?

And is it possible to improve the Camera on the Xiaomi Note 5?

There are apps that can do that such as SMS Backup & Restore:

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.riteshsahu.SMSBackupRestore&hl=en_GB

but the restore has to be from their backup.

If you used the Samsung Smart Switch Mobile app:

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sec.android.easyMover

it's possible as long as you can install it on the new phone. On my account it'll allow install to an old Samsung & a Sony Z5 Compact but not to my current Vodafone SU6.
