Again, thanks everyone. Didn't even know these were possibilities.

    Final questions.

I have no clue if I have an aerial. I got Sky as soon as I moved in 12 years ago.

If I wish to put free channels in my children's bedrooms (when they are a tad older), will I have to sort out aerials or can I just buy the cheap version for Freesat (I don't necessarily need them to have recording functions, just want them to be able to get the free
    channels).

Sky charge £10 a month to retain the PVR functions. It's pointless, as within a year you will have paid more than the cost of the Humax.
OP, buy from Humax Direct, JL, or Richer Sounds. Not Currys please!

Okey dokes. What's wrong with Currys?

What I don't get is that some of the options available say "Record a whole series," but others don't. Does this mean if I get one that doesn't have this function, I'm going to have to remember to record (for example), every single Corrie or Eastenders because it won't remember that I want to watch them all?

I was definitely offered it for £5 the last time I cancelled!

I have the basic subscription for about £11 a month currently

The cheapest Humax box for freesat is £180 - so if you managed a £5 deal from sky - it would take 3 years of subs to cover to Humax box cost.

I have thought about moving to Humax - but as long as I keep with the cheap sky, I'll be happy!

OP - once your sky is cancelled, you will probably get a few reconnect offers for 50% off - in case you would be interested?

It's been £10 or slightly higher for at least nine years now. Never known it to be £5 maybe you had an offer?

On some channels you get the option to record the series on others you don't and have to set individual recordings. All depends on the broadcaster. Should not be an issue with those two.

Go outside and look around your roof. It should be immediately apparent whether there is still a roof aerial.

However, since you know for certain (having had Sky) that your satellite dish and cables are in full working order, it would probably be prudent to go with Freesat rather than Freeview.

And under the kitchen sink. That's where my mum keeps her Ariel.

    Oh wait...
